Hey there @devla91,
Thanks for getting back to me with your operating system and the results of running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. 🙂
There definitely seems to be a communication issue between the printer and computer. To be honest, this issue is likely caused by the network connection. Now, whether it's security on the computer that's intermittently 'blocking' your printer like a 'threat' trying to access the computer, or the router blocking the printer is something that we still have to determine and resolve. When you have a networked printer there really is no gray area: it either works, or it doesn't. If your printer is able to connect to a network, even if intermittently, this proves that the network card is functioning in the printer. Let's try the steps below to resolve this network communication issue.
- Step 1: Powercycle Network:
- First, unplug the power cable to your Router
- Once your Router is unplugged, turn off your printer
- Next, shut down your computer
- After 30 seconds to 1 minute, plug your Router back in
- Next, turn on your printer
- Turn on the computer
After a few moments your internet connection will return. Please check on your computer that you are able to browse to websites before proceeding.
- Step 2: Check IP Address:
- On the front panel of your printer, press the down arrow until you see Wireless
- Hit OK to access the Wireless menu
- Down arrow to View Wireless Details
- Take note of the IP Address
- On your computer, please open the internet browser
- In the address bar type in the IP Address that you gathered from your printer. Do not include www.
- Search to this website
- If a website for your printer opens successfully, this proves with 100% that your printer and computer are communicating successfully over the wireless network. Please proceed to the next step.
- Step 3: Test Print and Scan:
Please test printing and scanning to confirm that the issue has been resolved. Should the print and scan issue persist, please proceed to the next step to temporarily disable the background programs from running on your computer.
- Step 4: MSCONFIG (Disable):
- Click on your Start menu
- In the 'search programs and files' box right above Start, type msconfig and hit enter on your keyboard
- When the System Configuration Window opens select 'Selective Startup' and uncheck Load Startup Items
- Click the Services tab. Check the box at the bottom for Hide All Microsoft Services
- Select Disable All
- Select Apply and OK
- Restart your computer when prompted
When your computer comes on, please test printing and scanning. Should everything work, please enable your background programs and test print and scan again.
- How to Enable Background Programs:
- Click on your Start menu
- In the 'search programs and files' box right above Start, type msconfig and hit enter on your keyboard
- When the System Configuration Window opens select 'Normal Startup'
- Select Apply and OK
- Restart your computer when prompted
When your computer comes on, please test printing nad scanning again. Should print and scan now fail, there is likely a background program on your computer that is causing the intermittent scan and print communication issues.
In terms of the "stop" and "start" issues when printing standalone, can you make sure that your printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet for power. Once plugged in directly, load 1 piece of paper on the flatbed glass on your printer and perform a Colour Copy. Does the printer still lag when printing?
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Good luck! 🙂

On the first step, cecking the ip, first attempt opened with "Internal System Error" second time oppened normally, third time "Internal System Error".
I tested the print, first time printed with the same lag, at half page stopped for about 1min and then continued.
Second time didn't work, so i went to the next step, closing the background programs. Test was ok. Enabled the background programs and is working. Already tested 4 times troughout the day so i guess problem solved.
I am planning on reinstalling the Windows on the laptop. After that, should any problems come back, i'll write here.
Until then, thank you so so much for your help. I owe you my sanity 🙂

All hail X-23 HP's Agent of awesomeness!
I have spent HOURS trying to get my printer to work, and was only able to do this by emailing the printer.
2 mins following these instructions, and we're all good!
Time to go buy some fresh ink!
Thanks X-23 go get yourself a pay rise

As of 21 july 2016, I can confirm this method works (Changing drivers to Deskjet 6980 series model)
Can be applied on USB or Wireless connection, both will work.
But now that Windows XP long-time support is over, you must first, before doing all theses, download and install the "basic package" of the Deskjet 6980 series, it is automatic and put nothing more than the drivers, no bloatwares or additionnal softwares.
Had this problem on a HP Envy 4520, up-to-date with official HP drivers and internal updates.
Be sure to click on "Apply" after changing Envy drivers with Deskjet in Properties Tab, you may have a protection access error windows then but it doesn't block anything (Word 2007 was opened during my fixes), the interface MUST change with the 7-tabs interface, can be checked with the "About" one.
Thanks again X-23
