My new HP Envy 7640 made a faint but cleary audible whistling noise even when turned off (the noise only stopped if I unplugged the power cable completely). I returned it to the shop and was given a replacement but the replacement does the same thing. Is this a general feature of the HP envy 7640 or is there a solution?

Hello Boutos,
I'd suggest you to call HP Tech Support for further assistance.
If you are in US , the toll free # is 1-800-474-6836 .
If you are not in US , then log on to www.hp.com , at bottom-left corner there is a world map icon, click on it and then select the region you belong to, which would then provide support options for you for that region.

Please contact HP Support and request a new power supply. The power supply is customer replaceable and can be easily removed by one screw.

Hi jmgonzalez,
I do have the same issue. Even when my printer is turned off it makes this high-frequent noise. Like talking to a modem.
I bought this printer in the Apple Store and requested a replacement. It will be here tomorrow.
Is this a worldwide production problem or will there be chances that I'll have a working power supply? I would be very unhappy if my replacement will have the same problems. By the way, after I did shut down the printer it tooked me more then 15 minutes to turn it on again. After several times of unpluggin and plug-in the power cable, it booted up but still with that nasty noise.
By the way, it seems the internal power slot is wobbly.
Crossing fingers my replacement will have no errors..
Excuse my bad english, I'm not a native speaker. (Live and bought printer in Germany)

HI Hirbod,
So sorry to hear that! I do hope that your replacement works for you but in the event it doesn't, please contact HP support. They can help with getting you a replacement power supply. The power supply can be easily removed with one screw.
Also, 15 mintues for the printer to boot up is not expected behavior. Please do let me know if the replacment has the same issues.

I called HP last night.
The lady took awhile trying to find info on the problem but gave up and tried transfering me to the "engineers."
They called me back the next day and quickly decided to mail me a power supply. I should be receiving it within the week.
I was sure to mention that I did my research and knew the solutions. #1 Engineer settings for quick fix and #2 New power supply. I made sure they knew so they were reluctant to do more novice troubleshooting.
