HP Ink Cartridges Combo Pack

I purchased the combo pack (cyan, magenta, yellow) and loaded two of the three on May 13, 2015.  The magenta & yellow are both out already (8/21/15).  I use the color very seldom on my printer.  Most everything I do is b & w.

This is the second time my cartridges have not lasted long and the retailer told me that they have seen this happen before that the HP cartridges do not have enough toner in them.  I do not use for photos, or anything color but on a rare occasion.

What's the deal?  These are expensive enough.

Hi @Gross3,

What printer model do you have?  How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

Ink is used in a number of ways throughout the printing process, from preparing the printer to print to the actual printing of documents, photographs and other materials. HP designs its inkjet printer systems to deliver outstanding value in printing customer documents while using enough ink to maintain a reliable printing system that delivers outstanding print quality over the life of the printer. -  Source and more information about ink usage

I certainly do appreciate your frustration, but please allow me to explain. Many Printers uses some color inks even when printing in black only. If you did run out of color and kept printing black only, it will cause problems with the printhead.

Just a thought: You can change your print settings to fast draft, this would allow less ink to be laid on the page and help to save ink.

Truthfully, I have the 6700 printer and got a low ink message not too long ago, I was still able to print as it was just a warning message to allow me the opportunity to get some back up ink, well of course I didn't, I finished the job and carried on with my life. Last night I tried to copy something and it down right refused to. As frustrated as I was, considering I have black ink, it is my magenta and yellow that are low, I understand. If the printer kept letting me, print air would pull through the depleted cartridge(s) and damage the printhead.

On one hand it sucks and is frustrating, but on the other hand it's kinda for the greater good.

High quality grayscale will use less cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY)  than say normal mode printing, but will not be a drastic reduction. However, the black ink only feature does reduce the CMY usage quite a bit. This setting produces a composite black.

The Black Ink Only feature will limit the color usage to only the amount that goes under the black ink to ensure a long standing printout and the true-black tone that is expected.

The most economical printing would be fast draft and black ink only.  The grayscale setting uses the color cartridge to print grayscale because this provides better quality.  The quality is better with grayscale but it will use more ink.

You can find some information in the following article. Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers.

Here is a document on Changing Print Settings in Windows 7, and one for Change Print Settings (Windows 😎. If you don't have Windows 7 or 8 let me know and I will find you the document specific to your OS.
