Working in InDesign, I am a Mac user too. Up until now I had been printing envelopes individually to avoid the printer getting stuck on the 1st envelope: by it printing, cleaning afterwards and then trying to print the exact envelope address again- telling me that the paper size didn't match. It wasn't so bad to press print multiple times because usually I was printing under 20 envelopes but I still figured there had to be an easier way.

Dtneumann's post gave me an idea to look at all my paper settings - and there are FOUR (yes, 4, possibly 5) places:

1   In the HP Utility, I have Tray 1 as: Default Media Type: "Mid-Weight 96-110g"

with the Default Media Size: "Custom".

2   In the Print Dialog Box, under Setup: I made sure I put in the exact dimensions of envelope.

(I was using A7 so it wasn't on their default list, so I typed it in as a Custom size.)

3   In the Print Dialog Box, clicking "Page Setup..." (in the lower left hand corner of the dialog box): Under Paper Size, I selected "Manage Custom Sizes" and put in the A7 dimensions again  I had to add it to the list in that window.

4   In the Print Dialog Box, clicking "Printer..." (in the lower left hand corner of the dialog box):

There will probably be a box that says "Layout" but click that and select "Paper Feed".

Then select "All pages from: Tray 1 (Manual)"

NOW THIS WAS THE PART THAT FIXED THE CLEANING/PAPER MISMATCH WARNING/MAKING ME PRINT ONE AT A TIME:  In the same that is headed by "Layout", now select "Color/Quality" and "Media Type: Mid-Weight 96-110g" the SAME as I had in the HP Utility in my Step 1. It looks like I made the mistake of telling the printer that I was printing an "Envelope" when that exact choice was never given in the HP Utility.

Once I did all these things, I was able to print all my envelopes at once, click OK at the printer once (for a manual feed) and it didn't stop to clean it after each one. Hope this helps. It has been 2 years that it took me to figure it out. I only print envelopes a couple of times per year, so this was maybe my 6th time, but it made my day that it worked.

Glad to hear that there is a chance to fix this problem. HP should really fix the problem. I am a windows user, and the software I print from is customer software for my business.

What bothers me is that when I first bought the hp printer it worked perfectly. This problem never happened. Now I can't print more than one item at a time.

Has anybody found a solution for windows users?

Can hp release an update to solve the problem?

My solution was on Windows (albeit Windows 7).  I have only used Windows 8 a bit, but I think the same stuff would apply as I believe it exposes the same capabilities at the printer driver level.  I'm not sure whether your software package does something custom with the print experience, but I'd think it'd use the standard Windows print dialog where you can tell it what paper size you're printing on.

Give it a try and let us know where it falls apart - maybe we can help.

Thanks for the info. I actually had the exact same problem (even the same envelope dimensions!) and had set all my settings to match your suggestions - even before reading your post.  Unfortunately, this did not work for me though. I then realized one difference between my situation and yours - the envelope orientation. When feeding the envelopes through the printer with the flap situated from front to back in the paper tray, as outlined in the graphic in the paper tray, the printer jammed every time I printed. To fix this, I situated the envelopes so the flap was running across the tray from left to right with the top of the envelope at the back of the tray (you have to change the orientation in Word before printing if you make this change). This eliminated the jamming; however, it introduced the cleaning and paper size mismatch. The realization I had was to reverse the envelope dimensions in the printer settings so they were opposite your settings - 7.25 x 5.25 instead of 5.25 x 7.25. That worked! No cleaning message and no paper size mismatch! Yayyyy!!!!

Hi everyone,

I've been reading all the posts and might have some kind of a blur mind that doesn't allow me to think straight.  It's a LaserJet 100 but don't think it changes much the problem.

I have exactly the same problem, using Windows 7, 'unexpected size' 'cooling down mode' load and press ok... but for plain simple A4 documents.

We are a small charity and we do most of our printing ourselves and rely massively on it with no budget for fancy fixing so any help would be so badly appreciated.

Many thanks to all who posted already and maybe to the one who might fix the problem?

Get your money back if you can. I went through two of these printers and both ended up in the garbage.
