The ADF on my printer when asked to make a copy shows document loaded but when print is touched makes a clicking sound and reports document misfeed.    Lifting the lid and trying again, simulating a loaded document the visible gear vibrates back and forth.  Thinking there was a jam I removed the ADF core assembly, opened it and found no broken gear teeth or anything visibly out of place. Reassembled and got the same result.  Acts as if the drive motor is rapidly going forward and reverse or maybe not able to start at all.  Any suggestion or fixes for this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hey PeteVS,

I see you have an issue getting the ADF of your CM1415fnw to feed properly.  It may be that the ADF needs to be cleaned and I see you opened it to check it out.  Take a look at the picture below for the areas I am discussing that may need to be wiped down.

  1. Open the ADF cover, and then find the rollers and the separator pad.
Figure 1: ADF rollers and separator pad
Illustration showing locations of the ADF rollers and separator pad
    1 - ADF rollers
    2 - Separator pad
  2. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with filtered or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
  3. Use the damp cloth to wipe any residue off the rollers and the separator pad.
  4. Leave the ADF open for two minutes to allow the pick rollers and separator pad to dry
  5. Close the ADF cover.

Also, take a look through the steps in the document linked below for addtional troubleshooting steps for the error you are receiving.

If this does not fix the issue let me know and I can provide you with the steps to reset this printer to a factory state.  This will help determine if the issue is just a glitch in the internal software of the printer or a true hardware issue that has developed that warrants product replacement.

The roller is clean. My problem is that ADF is just not being recognised.

Sorry, I meant to ask how to set it up to factory defaults.

Hey stevebungay,

I have the steps to perform a factory reset to this printer and will send them to you in a private message.  If you are not sure how to use this feature, please see the following post.

Before performing these steps please read Bob_Headrick's thread on printer resets, found here.

Cleaning ADF does not help.  I reset the paper size to letter.  Still no change.  How do I check thesoftware issues?

I am having the same problem - the main drive gear will twist back/forth very quickly a couple of times and give the error. It won't try to drive the gears/rollers to pick up the paper at all.

Thanks!

I have three machines with the same problem, I have interchanged the motor assembly with no solution. It seems the formatter card is not designed to work properly with the feeder assembly.

All I can tell tou is this feeder is meant to fail soon or later, so for me with three machines, it's just a piece of crap this model, with no warranty extended by HP with this desig issue. The solution for me was to buy another roller scanner but not HP, I don't trust anymore its quality.

Hi again. I finally found The problem. Interchanging the formatter card with other in good shape the issue persist. So I checked the continuity on the lines and found tha plain cable is bending too much cause a bad protection design. So You need to change The motor feeder line and that's it. I still think it is another epic design failure from HP Engineering (remember the Nvidia video failure on most notebooks?)

Hi Julio

Where is this cable and motor feeder line? Where did you buy the parts for replacement?
