My HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 PCL-3 will not stay connected wirelessly and it just stopped printing black ink. I've tried cleaning the vent. I've tried cleaning the printer heads. Nada. And yes, I just replaced the black ink cartridge about a week ago and when I could get it online, it did print black. Current levels indicate its still almost full. Help!

Hi @T5802,

Welcome to the HP forums! It is a great way to engage, post questions and find resolutions by working with specialists in the HP community. I understand you are having issues connecting wirelessly and it stopped printing black ink. I'll try my best to assist you with this

I would start by checking the installed printer software by downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and printer software related issues. Please use this link to help you with that information: http://hp.care/2biN2XE

If the issue persists, I would suggest you try these steps:

Check the status of the wireless connection.

Evaluate a Wireless Network Test Results page

Also, follow the step by step instructions listed here: Click here

Printer is Offline (Windows) - Click here

If nothing works, I would suggest you try to assign a manual IP and creating a TCP/IP Port which should help to resolve this issue.

Were you able to resolve this problem?  My printer has stopped printing black as well, and I've tried all the recommended steps from HP, I need an actual, real life answer.

Hi @T5802,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I see from the post that you are having issues printing in black on your HP OfficeJet 6970 printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

What is the Operating system installed on the PC? Mac or Windows

Did you replace the cartridge recently?

Are you able to make a copy from the printer?

How is the printer connected? USB or Wireless

Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine. I would suggest you uninstall the current drivers and then click here please select the Operating system and version before you download and install the full feature software for the printer.

If you’re running Windows, I would start by checking the installed printer software by downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and printer software related issues. Please use this link to help you with that information: http://hp.care/2biN2XE

For more assistance, please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP OfficeJet Pro 6900 Printers - Color or Black Ink is Not Printing

Please respond to this post with the details of the Operating system and with the results of the troubleshooting steps for further assistance.

I am using windows 7. I replaced the black ink cartridge about a month ago, but I don't print very often. It worked at first and then it started printing streaky and the other day it printed a page with a grey background the background printed but the black words were just white. I tried printing the cartridge status and all colours print, but the black is just blank **however the black brackets around the colours print. I tried printing an alignment page, a test page and I did all printer maintenance and black was just omitted. I checked the vent on the cartridge, I checked to see if it was dry. There is no reason it should not be working.

Hi @ninamac,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

As I understand you are having issues printing in black. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue. I would like to check do you see steaky lines while copying from the printer. If so, I would suggest you try to clean the cartridge contacts as well as the printhead and clean the scanner glass with the help of soft lint cloth.

If the copy comes out fine, I would suggest you try to uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13 ). Restart the PC

14 ). Now click on this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-6970-all-in-one-printer-series/828... choose the Operating system and version to download and install the updated printer drivers

15 ). Connect the USB cable only when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

If you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue, I would personally suggest this could be a printer hardware. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support for available service options. If your printer is out of warranty, please choose paid options to get the tech support number.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get the phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

If you have any troubles, let me know and I will do my best to help!

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.
