I have no control panel.  It isn't white or blank, but it shows a rolling bar code symbol.  I have turned it off and on as per the HP assistant/Doctor/support to no avail. I have also downloaded the most recent firmware and other available items from the website but this has not helped.

I guess taking this for repairs is next on the list. My question then is;  would it cost more to repair than a new machine? Or does anyone know if you can replace this item yourself..this item being the control panel/screen... Thanks so very much for any input one might offer.

Hi! @Cruiser2010, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand that the printer control panel shows bar code symbol.

Don't worry I'd like to like.

Thanks for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Try performing a hard reset on your printer.

Resetting the printer can help restore a connection to the computer.

1.If the printer is off, turn on the printer, and then check the status of the printer.

2.With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

3.Unplug the printer power cord from the wall outlet.

4.Wait at least 60 seconds. Restart the computer while you are waiting.

5.Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

6.Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

7.If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

If the persists please try performing a semi full reset on your printer and check if it helps.

Since the steps to perform semi full reset is confidential, I would be sending you the steps in a private message.

Also, Components on an HP printer are not customer replaceable parts, So you to contact HP support for service options.

If the issue still persists after semi full reset it is a hardware issue, please contact HP support for service options.

Link to contact HP.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

MrRobot,  Thank you for your generous and informative input.  I will try these steps one more time tomorrow and see if I can get anythiing to show on the screen.  I am inclined to think it will be as you mentioned,  "a hardware issue" and I will probably have to contact HP once again.  I will post my results once i complete the steps you mentioned.. Thanks once again.

Greetings,  I have fixed the problem I was having with my HP Office Jet Pro 8600.

I bought a new Canon Pixma 922 for $73.00 on Amazon.  Has same features as the HP 8600, copy scan, fax.  Would have cost more than this to repair the HP which was only about 4 years old.  And no, I did not buy another HP .
