My 7740 is right out of the box.  Yesterday.  Already wrestling with it to do basic thing like printing from Paper Tray 2.  Wasting my time.  Can't afford this as an independent consultant.

ShlomiL's common sense suggestion doesn't work -- this is unacceptable.  It should work.  It's like he copied it out of the manual.

I remember using drivers that allowed choosing either paper tray or correctly determined which one to use automatically in 1997 !!!  That was TWENTY YEARS AGO  !!!

HP do you care?

Found the problem I was having -- it's not the 7740 driver failing to auto select paper tray by paper size selected in the print dialot, it's that, in my case, Adobe Acrobat ALSO requires checking the box in the print dialog box "choose paper source by paper size" -- apparently not checking that box disables the 7740 driver.  Or the 7740 driver can't override Adobe if you wan't to look at it that way.

ShlomiL -- please add this note to your recommended fix description for it to be more comprehensive.

How d you ensure thatthe paper tray is set at Automatic?I cant find a setting on the printer for that. I am using Mac OS and Word for Mac

Hi @Taiecosell,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

You can set the default tray on the printer front panel for Automatic selection of tray for printing.

1.  Go to Printer Front Panel

2. Swipe down and go to Setup (Gear icon)

3. Scroll down to Tray and "Paper Management"

4. Go to "Paper settings" to ensure Tray 1 is set to A4 and Tray 2 is set to A3

5. Go to "Default tray" and set it to Tray 1 (where A4 media is loaded and it's the most widely used media)

6. For Tray Lock, ensure that is set to "None" (else Automatic selection of tray will not work)

7. Ensure that you have the correct document size set for your Word document (e.g. A3) and then when you print, select the Default settings and it will automaticall pick from Tray 2 for A3 document.

This resource will show you how it is done:

Hope that helps!

Had the same issue with 17x11 paper and posted a message but got no response.

Then I searched on the Internet and was directed to your solution.

Thanks it worked great.

Pity HP can't resolve or answer issues like this.

Thanks again.
