It doesn' work from the printer either. They can't find one and other, even though I can do the scanning from the computer.

The computer also says that scanning to computer are not activated, and when I try to do tahat, they can't communicate. When I click on scanningtasks, I can scan from the computer. Really an irritating BUG!

Hi flisan,

I am sorry to hear that your Officejet 8600 Plus is not functioning correctly for you. I am going to recommend a couple of things to try to hopefully correct the issue for you.

1. Repair disk permissions

2. Restart your Computer

3. (Reinstall) - HP Officejet Pro 8600 series Full Feature Software and Driver- OS X 10.9 Mavericks

I hope this helps! 🙂

Same problem for me.

I've just received as a gift a "beautiful" HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.

The "scan to computer" feature is a mirage that appears (rarely) and disappear in the HP Utility screen.

The only way to use the scan function is:

1) open Preview.app;

2) select (from File Menu) "import from HP Officejet Pro 8600";

3) select scan mode flatbed;

4) start scan;

5) select (from File menu) "take screenshot from selection";

6) select the area of the document to save;

7) select the document format (pdf, jpeg, tiff, ecc.).

Very easy. Thank you HP!!!!!

I too have the same problem as facman. "Scan to Computer cannot be enabled. Am running MAC OSX V10.7.5. Uninstalled the printer software then reinstalled the full featured software V12.23.0. It made no difference - when you go to the HP Utility and select "scan to Computer" it says the feature is not enabled. When you enable it, you get the message"Communication Error - uanble to communicate with device"

very frustrating.

to make matters worse, the HP Photosmart printer that I have had connected to my Mac for some time, no longer scans as well!!!

HP what have you done to mess up? Any suggestions would be appreciated before I send this back for a refund.

The support from  HP is a catastrophy! I will take this printer back to the shop and return it. IT DOES NOT WORK as it is supposed to do!

I will never buy HP again. This is my third HP and I was so stupid to buy it again.

When I had a chat with the man in the store after I bought it, and told him about my problems,  he said: Well everybody who works in sales with HP knows that there is always problems with HP. You will always have to restart it to get it to work before you can print anything from your PC or Mac.

Why don't You solve the problems HP????

I have had the same issue for the last month. Typically I have fixed it by simply turningboth my computer and printer off anfd then back on. No success and very frustrating.  I have followed your steps twice now and still no luck!  In fact now, I do not even see "enable scan to computer" as an option in the HP Utility.

HELP

The only thing that fixed the problem is installing the software from the disc that comes with the printer.

I know that Apple is supposed to have all the drivers installed for printers, but that will not work by iteself. I even installed the software update for Mavericks. I finally uninstalled everything and installed from the disc. Works great now, both print and scan.

I experience exactly the same or even worse: Under Mavericks it has become impossible to scan at all. Whatever I do, reinstalling software, reconfiguring all, power cycles, nothing helps.

Since this is not the first time I experience difficulties with hp software, I have to express my great frustration with the inability by HP's sofware engineers to ever write some software that functions. Yes, the software looks different from the outside, but it seems they are unable since decades by now to resolve the smallest issues and the very same bugs seem to be still present in the sofware underneath the new surface. For instance, it seems that they have never carefully designed an algorithm that handles the setup for scan to computer when there is one one printer and several computers connected to it in the same local network. This is our setup and I have never ever been able to get it working with the hp software! At best I got one computer to work and to be able to scan to.

However, now things got considerably worse. At least the Apple standard drivers used to work for scanning. But now under Maverick even that seems to be gone. Now I am really mad at this crap software, in particular since warranty is over, and I can no more get any help from HP, Grrrrrrr!!
