Hey there,

Same problem on my Macbook Air. I've spoke with HP Tech support over and over again, they have remotely accessed my Macbook and spent a while trying to fix the problem. The only way I'm able to scan is buy using the HP Easy Scan app I'm so frustrated because it always seem like something with the HP.

The latest update fixed it for me.

Tech support downloaded and installed the update when they remote accessed my computer but still no luck waiting for another level of tech support to contact me.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll share what worked for me on my HP OfficeJet 7612 (had the problem on both OS 10.9 and 10.10).

I have a mac, was getting the scan error.  Tried everything else I could find through google, except for a full uninstall/reinstall (which I figured was not going to help because I had just done a clean install from the HP drivers site).

For me, the fix came when I did two things:

  • Disabled IP v6 via HP Utility (Computer --> HP Utility --> All Settings --> Printer Settings (Network Settings) --> IP v6 (disabled/unchecked) --> Apply Now
  • Enabled Wireless Direct via Printer Settings (Printer --> Setup --> Network --> Wireless Direct (turn on)

I'm not sure which one made the ultimate difference, but all of my computers that weren't working with the scan function, immediately started working.

Quick note that before this fix, I was able to scan via the Mac System Preference panel called "Printers and Scanners".  This is what initially led me to believe there was a more HP specific problem that fell outside of general printer communications.

Hope this helps someone else!

I am glad you got yours to work.

I junked the printer and now no more 8600 problems.

We have some friends that own ranch property outside of San Antonio.

After having my fill of the problem we took the 8600 out for target practice.  We found that it stood up pretty well to a .22, the .44 magnum was the best for disintegrating parts nicely.

No more 8600 printer problems.
