HP OfficeJet Pro 8625
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

All of a sudden (firmware update?), most of my printer settings are locked.  The printer and s/w app for it tell me that "this feature has been locked by an administrator or the person who set up the printer."  I'm the guy who set it up 2 years ago, with no admin settings (didn't know there were any).

Now, I cannot change the time, advanced net settings, or even do a factory reset.  I cannot access an admin screen, which doesn't seem to exist anyway.  I have unplugged and restarted after many minutes.  No success.  Some forums talk about pressing the back button...well, mine disappears on the home screen.

How do I rescue this printer so it functions, or are we all just awaiting a corrective update from HP?

I need to remove the admin locks or gain admin rights...as this is on my own machine at home, this seems silly.

I didn't ask for this when I bought this HP.

UPDATE:  I scoured the forums..."back" button 4 times from the home screen.  Then the major reset.  Wasted ink and lost my hp printer email address, as it issued me a new one with gobbledegook letters.  But the problem is fixed, until it happens again.  Why?

Hi @JP-4,

Please find the steps to perform a semi full reset to factory settings. Before that from the support menu try to disable adminstrator settings and check. If this does not work please performa semi full reset

Support Menu >Resets Menu>Semi-Full Reset

  1. While applying power, press and hold Power button for 5 sec.
  2. Press BL, BL, BL, BL Buttons, in sequence.
  3. Touch Support Menu.
  4. Press Right arrow for Reset Menu and Touch OK.
  5. Press Right arrow for Semi-Full Reset and Touch OK.
  6. Wait for unit to Power Down/Turn Off.
  7. Press Power button to turn the Printer On.

BL stands for Bottom left and it is the back arrow key on the lower left of the printer screen.

Hi @JP-4,

Good day. May the forums welcome you! 🙂 It is a great location to find resolutions. I read the post regarding the printer not working correctly.

I reviewed the post about the printer being locked with administrator settings and does not let you work with it.. I’ll be more than happy to assist you here. 🙂

At the outset, you’ve diagnosed the issue perfectly and performed great analysis of the situation before posting the query on HP forums.

Excellent job on that score. Kudos to you. It is always a privilege to work with technically savvy customers.

I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. We value your relationship with HP and wish to serve you better. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did you try to perform a hard reset of the printer?
  • Have you tried to make copies directly from the printer?

I will send you a private message to disable administrator settings. If this does not work, please perform a semi-full reset to factory settings. That should do the trick for you.

Please keep checking your forum private messages.

Hope this helps.  Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂  Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
