I turned off the printer then unpluged the power cord from unit waited a minute then pluged in back in and turned it on. I had to do a an aliment scan which didn't work and x that out and now back to normal.

I bought brand new ink and my printer says the color is not compatible.  Th Black from the pack has no problems at all. Now that is has done this the printer will not print and has stopped working completely. I am dissatified in the time that I have had this printer as my last one which was not HP lasted for over 10 years. This one lasted less than a year pathetic. I will never by HP again perhaps I will go Brother Printers in stead. HP has pulled an Epson with computer chipped ink so they can make more money. SCAM AND THEFT. [Content Removed] Thanks HP for failing Lexmark as cheap as they are was a better printer with a 10 year life span and no ink problems.

Thanks Lorraine,

I licked my finger and wiped the copper part and the ink exit and it's working for now.  We'll see how long it lasts.  I wonder about the quality of HP ink cartridges, this is first one I've had that keeps anything from printing brand new out of the box from Target.

Hi folks

If you get a cartridge related error message (such as 'Print Cartridge Problem') on an OJ 4500, try removing the cartridge and cleaning the contacts...(use a foam swab or a lint free cloth and some distilled water)

  1. Figure 9: Clean the contacts
    1 - Copper-colored contacts
2 - Ink nozzles (do not clean)

If that doesn't work, then contact HP Phone Support as you may require a replacement (you can first check the warranty ends date that's lasermarked onto the cartridge - the format is YYYY/MJM/DD)

    Hope this helps

hey there i successfully solved the same problem i too was facing. first clean the cartridge copper electrical contacts on the printer . then don't insert any cartridge and start the printer. it will give an error. then next insert only color cartridge first. start the printer. it will say no black cartridge. then insert the black one.. it worked for me. 🙂

My printer was working fine and sudenly I got the 'Print cartridge problem: (tri-color) Refer to device documentation to troubles...'. my color cartridge still have ink, I tried power reset printer & computer, clean the cartridge etc. as suggested in the help function but no good.

I remove the color cartridge as your suggested and at least I can make b/w copy,

but still cannot print from computer. The printer application put the printer offline and gives printer system error.

I am very disappointed that HP makes this machine totally cartridge dependent. Once you run into problem with the cartridge, you cannot even use it as a scanner. HP makes tone of money this way legally, but it is a sin!
