Soaked the printhead assembly in hot water, dried it and reinstalled it and it is now working.

I had to do it a couple of times before it worked.

Thank you for the reply. I also tried the soaking etc. many times but still nothing. the concluseion by HP and I was the print head would need to be replaced. Further decision by HP, Vendor and myself was regarding the multicolor printhead, It srarting giving me a similar problem.

The minimim investment would have been at least $134 for the black ink printhead. Close behind would have been a multi color print head to.

Checked into Staples online for printheads and printers. This printer prints well usually. It was a replacement for my HP mobile printer when it went out.

Staples showed online a HP mobile printer for 399.99 on sale for 299.99 but not in store and back order online. I went to the store as because online is not a true fact for all store locations. They did not have it. I went to office depot and purchased the new HP mobile printer. I asked the salesperson if they honor other store's discount pricing. He replied the manager would be the one to decide. the manager accepted my online documentation and took the $100 of the price. Therefore for $299.99 I have a very fine working printer for anywhere or anytime which is a better choice for my busy life. I figured even if both printheads were $134 that is $268 initially with no guarantee of any kind.

I hope this helps others. Have a good evening.

What printer do you have?  The officejet 6500 models have a printhead assembly that contains the black and color printheads on the same replaceable assembly.

thank you for your reply. Yes the printer is 6500 A Plus. HP steered me wrong but it all worked out for the best. The 134 plus shipping/handling without a guarantee as compared to 299.99 for a new printer (more useful size etc. for me) was a better deal in the end.

Have a good evening.

Persistence was key to my success in using the rinsing and soaking procedure to cure the problem of black ink not printing. Here's what I had to do:

1. Rinsed area where ink cartridges meet printhead assembly (I call it the "business end" of the printhead) under hot running water for 20 minutes. Lots of ink ran out but I could not get water to run 100% clear.  I let it dry 3 days, tried it in printer-but no luck

2. Placed business end of printhead in alcohol for a day and rinsed with hot water but a little ink still came out-I still could not get water to run 100% clear, so I gave up and dried it 3-4 days, tried it in printer- no luck.

3. Again, soaked it in soapy (dish detergent) water 3  days-rinsed it under hot water. Water ran clean most of time but there were intermittent slight traces of color. When I tapped my printhead onto a clean white paper towel, bits of color would still come out onto the towel. Seemed like I would never get that last trace of ink out of the printhead, so I gave up trying to rinse all ink out and  again dried 3-4 days-tried it - no luck.

4. Soaked it yet another 3 days in soapy water, followed by the usual rinsing of business end of printhead under hot water. Finally, the water ran clear!  I was able to tap business end of printhead onto a white paper towel and not a speck of ink came out.

5. Dried 4 days, tried it and it works perfectly. Have copied/printed 150 pages of text and so far, it works as good as new. Thank you so much for the solution on this forum and for mention of how important it is to persist. Mine was truly a case that proved the point.

Both my wife's and my (separate) Officejet 6500 E709n printers have both stopped working, on exactly the same day. They are not interconnected in any way. Both are direct connections to our separate PC's. Both have stopped printing black ink correctly. One prints "spotty" black, the other not at all. I have replaced the black ink cartridges (with "official" HP cartridges), and neither still don't work.  Any ideas? Help!
