HP Photosmart 6515

I have an HP Photosmart printer that refuses to print black ink.  I have done everything on the Customer Support Troubleshooting page, but it still doesn't work.  My printer is no longer under warranty.

A simple google search tells me that this is a VERY common problem, and I would like to know if any solution has worked (other than buying a new printer, which I saw one person consider a "solution" when nothing else worked).  If I end up having to buy a new printer, I can guarantee it won't be HP.

Hi @Jen_91,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips!

I understand you are having issues printing in black on your HP Photosmart printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

  • Which country do you reside in and was the printer purchased from the country?
  • Did you replace the cartridge recently?
  • Did the error appear all of sudden while using an existing cartridge which worked fine earlier on the same printer?
  • Have you tried to use old set of cartridges and check if that helps?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.

Let’s first try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to clean the ink cartridge contacts as well as the printhead, For more assistance, please follow all the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Photosmart 6510 Printers - Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink

If you have an old set of ink cartridges or compatible cartridge please insert them and check if that helps, If this works, which clearly indicates it could be an issue with the cartridge itself.

If nothing works, then it could either be an issue with the printhead or the printer itself. I would recommend you contact our HP phone support so that they can provide you with out of warranty upgrade options.
