Just installed Yosemite (10.01.1) on my macbook pro. This printer is "listed" as my IP address, in my attempts to
sync it up, however error messages say things like..."this printer cannot be found". The printer icon shows a
red dot, meaning there is a problem. The print window says... Printing - This printer is not responding.
Any suggestions? Thanks for reading...

Hey @SheWhoSings,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're having issues printing to your HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One Printer from your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Now HP does not make a full feature software and driver download for this model of printer on the Mac OS X 10.10 Operating System. However, there is a generic driver that the Apple Update provides. Therefore, by the time you're done the troubleshooting steps I'm going to provide you with below you should be able to use all features of your printer on your Mac Operating System.
Please disconnect your USB Cable if it is attached to your computer before proceeding.
Step 1: Uninstall Drivers:
First I'm going to have you Reset the Print System on your Mac. This will remove all printers from your Print & Scan folder but does not uninstall them. Therefore, if you use other printers on your Mac computer just ensure that they are plugged in with the USB Cable or Network connected and simply hit the (+) plus sign to add them back into the Print & Scan folder. Do not add your Photosmart back in yet.
1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
2. Click Print & Scan
3. Right click (or Ctrl + click) your printer in the list on the left side of the window, and then click Reset printing system.
4. Click OK to confirm the reset.
5. Type your user name and password in the Name and Password text fields.
6. Click OK. The printing system resets.
If you used Apple Update to initially install your printer, please follow the steps below to remove the printer drivers.
1. From the computer desktop, double-click the Macintosh HD icon.
2. Double-click the Library folder.
3. Double-click the Printers folder.
4. Right-click the HP folder, and then select Move to Trash.
5. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password for the computer, and then click OK. Wait for authentication to complete.
6. Double-click the PPDs folder.
7. Double-click the Contents folder.
8. Double-click the Resources folder.
9. Locate your printer in the printer list, and then right-click on your printer and select Move to Trash.
10. When prompted, type the Administrator name and Password for the computer, and then click OK. Wait for authentication to complete.
11. Click the Trash icon on the taskbar, click the Empty button, and then click OK to empty the trash.
12. On the upper-left corner of the computer desktop, click the Apple menu icon (), and then click System Preferences on the drop-down menu.
13. Click Print & Scan
14. In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button () to delete it.

Step 2: Verify and Repair your Disk Permissions on the Mac:
- Open Macintosh HD and go to Applications
- Go to the Utilities Folder
- Open the Disk Utility
- Select the Hard Drive volume you are using (usually on the left)
- Select Verify Disk Permissions
- Once that process is done, select Repair Disk Permissions
Step 3: Check for Apple Updates and Install your Printer:
- Ensure your printer is powered on and connect your printer USB Cable or ensure that it is connected over the network connection.
- Go to Apple
- Select System Preferences
- Select Software Update
- Click Update Now
- Install your available updates
- Restart your computer
Step 4: Add your Printer:
1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
2. Click Print & Scan
3. Please do the following, depending on if your printer is already listed or not:
- If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm communication with the Mac. Click the name of your printer, click the minus sign (
), and then delete the printer. Once the printer is removed, click the plus sign (
), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
- If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign (
), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
4. Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer in the pop-up menu.
5. Click Add to add the printer to the list. If you are prompted to install your printer software from Apple, click Download and Install to complete the installation.

Once the printer is successfully added in try to print again. Please let me know if these steps resolve your printing issue on your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. Good luck!

Hello, Thank you for your response. I tried everything that was suggested to no avail. It seems like there is no
"connection" between the printer and the computer...like basically this computer and that printer are not "talking to one another". I now have this printer listed in my printer list, however
when I press Print in photoshop, nothing happens and I get error messages. Attached is a photo of my computer window with 1 of them. I tried to download whatever drivers, but nothing shows up in my downloads... Help... thanks...

Day 2...my mac store finally showed a (generic?) download for drivers for this printer and I activated the download button. I restarted my computer...I opened photoshop to print a .jeg and no workie... once again attached is a copy of the error message...this time is says something about a filer... I'm getting close to throwing this printer through my window...help...

Hey @SheWhoSings,
Thanks for getting back to me regarding this issue. I'm sorry to hear that the steps I provided failed to resolve your printing issues. This issue is tough as HP doesn't actually make a Full Feature Software and Driver download for your HP Photosmart C4680 All-in-One Printer on your Mac OS X 10.10 Operating System, due to the age of your printer. Therefore, we are at the mercy of your Apple Update generic driver for your printer loading properly.
Now I can see by your screen shots that your printer and computer are 'talking' to one another, as your printer does show as 'idle' in your Print & Scan folder. However, you mentioned that Photoshop is failing to print for you at this point.
Have you tried to print from any other program?
If so, do other programs (such as Textedit) print successfully for you?
You may also want to try to manually load the HP Drivers package for Mac 10.10. Click here to access the HP Printer Drivers v3.0 for OS X on the Apple website. Download the driver package. Once the download is complete, just delete (-) minus and readd (+) plus in your printer in your Print & Scan folder. Once we ensure that your printer is using the latest Apple driver please try printing again.
Please let me know if it is only Photoshop that you're having the issue printing from or if the communication issue lies with all programs. Also, please let me know if manually loading the Apple Driver package resolves your issue. Best of luck! 🙂
