I'm using the HP Photosmart c410a printer. It includes four slots for regular-size black, yellow, cyan and magenta cartridges. It also has a fifth slot for a double-size black cartridge. At the moment, the regular-size black cartridge is empty, the regular yellow, cyan and magenta cartridges are full, and the double black cartridge is full. When I print a B/W or color document, no black ink is printed. Shouldn't the double-black cartridge substitute for the single-black in this case? If not, what's the point of having a double-black cartridge? Is there some place either in the HP software or on the printer panel where I need to configure the printer to use the double-black cartridge?
Thanks in advance for any and all helpful pointers.

You are welcome.
The HP Photosmart C410 does not take two Black ink cartridges, the left cartridge slot is intended for Photo ink cartridge only:
You may find a cartridge mark near the cartridge slot itself, the very right slot, marked with a Pentagon mark is intendef for the black or Black XL cartridge, the very left slot is intended for the Photo Cartridge only, you may find the different shape to identify the correct cartridge (as the different mark is shown within the document linked from my previous post.
You may find any compatible ink cartridges for the C410 listed at HP suresupply:

Hi,
The printer only include a single slot for Black cartridge.
The printer uses a Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and a Photo cartridge.
The photo cartridge is intended for quality photo printing (e.g. gray values, etc), it does not meant to replace and cannot be used instead the standard Black ink cartridge.
You may find more about its purpose within the Solution section below:

Thank you. This was not the correct solution, but that's my fault for not providing more information. The HP Photosmart c410a takes five cartridges, but none of them are photo cartridges. The far left slot takes a 564 black cartridge, while the far right slot takes a 564XL black cartridge. Even if I print a photo, the color black is missing. I'm pretty sure that when I insert a new 564 black cartridge in the slot at left, it will print documents and photos normally. However, that would mean that the printer is unable to use the XL slot. Once again, I need to ask if I need to do something to "tell" the printer to draw ink from the XL cartridge. If not, then I have a hardware problem.
By the way, HP sells the three color cartridges and the XL black cartridge bundled together.

Once again you're incorrect. HP's own marketiing literature says "Save 13% per page when you buy this HP 564XL High Yield Black Ink Cartridge instead of the standard cartridge-ideal for high-volume printing." By the way, the HP suresupply link you posted does not even include the Photosmart c410 series.
Just the same, thanks for your effort. I gave you a kudo. Now I just need a helpful answer.

Hey DLinSF,
I would like to help clarify a little information about the ink system of your printer, the Photosmart Premium C410a. ShlomiL is accurate in his statements about the cartridges/ink system of this model printer. Look at the image below:
Below is a picture of an actual C410a in my location:
The picture shows the 5 cartridges installed in a printhead of a C410a. The far left (grayish in color) cartridge is the Photo black and is represented by the 'bowtie' symbol. The far right cartridge (pentagon symbol) is the black cartridge for the C410a. This cartridge can be either the regular size (CB316WN) cartridge or the XL size (CN684WN) cartridge. The standard cartridge has an estimated print yield of 250 pages and the XL an estimated 550.
If you have a black cartridge installed that isn't producing black ink, then you are having a print quality issue with the unit. I would advise taking a look through the document linked below.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for clarifying. Your attached link to the Troubleshooting Print-Quality Issues page was very helpful and informative.
By the way, my printer started working again, even though I didn't do anything. Maybe the printer's automatic servicing routine resolved the issue.
