Tried hard reset as suggested, still getting same message. "Carriage Jam, clear carriage jam. Press OK. Any suggestions ? Like new, used in my truck one summer. Cheaper to buy new and pitch it ?

There are a few things I would do in this case. I would remove all the paper from the input tray and make sure there isn't anything caught in the rollers that would block the carriage pathway. Also, look inside the printer, to the right side of the carriage, and make sure there isn't anything blocking the carriage movement here.
Have you tried lifting up on the carriage and trying to move it gently by hand? Can it move all the way left and all the way right inside the printer?
There is also a document with more troubleshooting steps for a carriage jam found here.
If all troubleshooting steps are performed and the error continues to be present on the printer display, then the next step is going to be product replacement. If you are still in warranty, HP may replace the printer at no cost to you. I'll link the information to get in touch with them below. The link will take you to a form to fill out. Once you fill it out and it is processed, it will give you the printers warranty information, a case number, and the phone number to call.
