Dear Lil_Lisa27,
First thanks for your efforts trying to help me.
Note, I tried everything as you have recommended and directed me to, except for the USB variant, which did make little sense and was physically impossible for me. Unfortunately nothing worked and I almost gave up.
Fortunately I have been able to resolve the issue as described here . I stumbled over this by chance while replying to some contributions in this thread. The problem was with the instructions you directed me to, i.e. A 'Connection Error' or 'No Computer Detected' Error Message Displays during Scanning, which I religiously followed, yet they did not contain any helpful instructions, since they were missing out on the point described in that other thread, i.e. "Reset printing system ..." and restart.
Now, the reason why I am writing is not only to thank you for your attempt to help me, but also to let you know about the solution.
Finally I also write because of the disturbing observation: I regularly check whether HP is releasing new driver software, i.e. I visited HP Officejet Pro 8600 series Full Feature Software and Driver- OS X 10.9 Mavericks - HP Officejet Pr...
What I find disturbing and confusing is the fact that HP seems to indicate that this software was recently released, i.e. on 2014-01-29. The version is exactly the same as the previously on 2013-11-21 released one, i.e. the file name is identical 'HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.37.dmg'. So what is going on? What is HP doing here, rereleasing the same software or what? And if they actually changed something, it ought to get another version number. This is most messy and confusing and ought not be, whatever the answer is. HP should correct this.
Can you perhaps clarify?
Thanks for your help and cooperation.
Sincerely yours,
Andreas Fischlin

Your temporary solution, which I can't use, was posted in November 2013. It is now February 2014 and I am still
having the same problem with my scans not making a usable file. HP what are you guys doing everyday? This should be fixed in one day before you make everyone mad and want to buy a competing scanner and printer, for life.

I am having problems saving a scanned image from my hp printer to my computer. I just also updated software with Maverick OX and it seems it is not compatible. What do I do? I spend many hours scanning pictures , and now i can't . Is there a solution?

DEAR BABSHEART
Sorry friend..........
Look back to all the comments starting in OCTOBER 2013 until today. About 32 pages of people all having Maverick problems.
We all just have to keep POUNDING on HP and Apple.
Good luck. Don't quit, don't give up.

Image capture does not see the Scanjet 4890. Even if it did, these half-baked "solutions" are a very poor response from a multi-bilion $$$ "computer" company that ought to care more about its customers. Drivers do not come from Apple. Apple gives companies what they need to write drivers. Epson, Samsung, Canon, Brother all seem to be able to keep their end of the "deal" when it comes to meeting customer expectations regarding 3rd party compatible devices and writng drives and other updates. Carley Fiorna ruined a once reliable and proud company.

I solve my problem but I didn't read every post here to know if it's identical to yours.
After upgrading to Mavericks, it reset my scan options to JPEG which is meant to scan just one picture at a time.
After I switched the Format to PDF, the Combine into single document came back.
Thanks

I got support from Apple on line. Go to applications and click on image capture. You can scan from this app instead of your HP app. In image capture you need to coordinate your printer before it can scan. If you need help go to apple support. com and ask for a tech. They will help you .

scubaboy25,
I made that same remark on 10/28/2014 (see page 2 of this forum): Image Capture does not see the Scanjet 4890. No problem for Apple, but just an HP Scanjet 4890 driver problem.
babsheart,
That comment of mine was a reaction to HP's FretnBoutNutn (see page 1 of this forum) who gave the initial advice to use Image Capture. You don't need Apple for that: HP is well aware, and erroneously presents it as a "solution" to the problem, but refuses to repair.
We apparently tend to repeat each other in this forum. I am afraid the next 32 pages will offer no new insights.
