About the download:
I don't know whether it has a 'version' or not. It's from HP, not Apple.
As instructed by the HP experts, I kept looking at the HP support page for software meant for my machine.
For a long time the list went up to OS X 10.8 — which wasn't any help.
Then a link for 10.9 appeared — as, I gather, it has already done for other HP models.

Yes, I see this wonderfully enticing button for the driver and software for my Officejet 7310, that says, 10.9, Mavericks, and all that I have been hoping for ever since I first asked on 10/27, exactly one month ago. So yuo click on that and get a detailed set of instructions.... that lead you to downloading from Apple. And of course there is nothing to be downloaded from Apple. I think this misleading information on the web site, and giving the customers the run-around is shameful and unworthy of HP.

Jbminster,
Please help me understand what is confusing you. We've spent a lot of time on this document, if it doesn't make sense to someone, I would like to know why. It specifically states that you install the Software from Apple Software Update. There most certainly is a download from Apple. If you are printing with your product than you most likely already have it. It goes on the tell you that scanning will be done from Image Capture.

Dear Lisa,
I can't help thinking that (at least for Scanjet devices) focussing on drivers misses the point. My experience (with Scanjet 4890) and others (e.g. jwbbccp in message 143 of this forum) is that HP Scan (version 2.4.4) shows the scan results OK, and also the workaround via Preview works perfectly. The problem is storing/printing from HP Scan. My conclusion: nothing wrong with the driver, but we are looking forward to an update of HP Scan version 2.4.4. In earlier days, HP provided us with patches for HP Scan under 10.7 and 10.8; we desperately need one now for HP Scan under Mavericks.

For what it's worth (since I started this thread) —
when I downloaded the file from the HP website and did all the usual things for installing software, I was given the option to install one, two, or three items, one of which was HP Scan. I forget what the others were. I just installed the whole lot.
The version of HP Scan that's now nestled in the dock says it's version 4.4.1 (21), and (as reported above) it seems to do what it's supposed to do.

So, what is it you do not understand? I had taken all the steps described in this document a month ago, so it contains zero new information. Image Capture and Preview are unacceptable alternatives. For the nth time, I would like to know when HPScan will allow the user to save the file properly as opposed to generating garbage ...It is astounding to me that this should be so difficult.
... and if you tell me that I need to buy a new printer/scanner, I may well have to do that, but it certainly will not be an HP machine. Even though I have been a faithful HP customer since my first HP-35 in 1972, I have already begun to warn many friends and colleagues against the remarkable decline of HP products.
