Thanks, folks.
I keep looking at the HP Drivers & Downloads page for my all-in-one model.
So far, the list goes down to OS X 10.8 only. (Mavericks is 10.9.)
I take this to mean that no 'fixed' software is available yet.
If I'm wrong, I hope someone will let me know.

The hardware scan button (to preview) works fine.
The tech support engineer said that the HP Scan App that I downloaded from HP a while ago was supported only to 10.6 and was obsolete for 10.8 adn 10.9. He also said that no fix was in the works.
I called the 800 number and I'm pretty sure he wasn't an American.

Please keep us posted guys. I've been a loyal HP customer for many years. The scan issue with Mavericks is a big pain in the rump roast. Just FYI, some of the folks I've dealt with via the 800 number are giving out misinformation an do suggest I buy a new printer because mine is no longer supported (Photosmart C4780). Please keep us in the loop.
Cheers

WRT to scanning issues, since applying the HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X in Snow Leopard, Mtn Lion, and Mavericks, HP Scan 2.4.0 doesn't work with my Photosmart C4680 AIO, bringing up a message stating:
Dyld Error Message:
Library not loaded: /Library/Printers/hp/Frameworks/HPDeviceModel.framework/Versions/3.0/HPDeviceModel
Referenced from: /Library/Image Capture/Support/Hewlett-Packard/Frameworks/HPScanProfiles.framework/Versions/A/HPScanProfiles
Reason: image not found
My investigations indicate that the update failed to change /Library/Image Capture/Support/Hewlett-Packard/Frameworks/HPScanProfiles.framework/Versions/A/ HPScanProfiles to point to /Library/Printers/hp/Frameworks/HPDeviceModel.framework/Versions/4.0/HPDeviceModel, vice /HPDeviceModel.framework/Versions/3.0.
After modifying the HPScanProfiles executable, replacing 3.0 with 4.0,, I can now launch HP Scan, but after selecting a scan profile and clicking on the Scan button, an error dialog comes up, which basically says shut off the machine, check the power cord and cable, reboot the computer, uninstall/reinstall the device, and reinstall the HP software. I've done all but the last step w/o getting HP Scan to work, so there appears to be more coding issues.
My next step is to reinstall the latest HP software for this machine, PS_AIO_05_C4600_NonNet_Full_Mac_WW_108, reinstall HP Printer Drivers 2.13, since I don't have the 2.14 update, and see if HP Scan works. If so, then I'll not install the 2.16.1 update until HP and Apple figure out what's breaking HP Scan.
Do note that using the HP Photosmart C4600 Series app, the Printers & Scanners prefPane, or Image Capture, I can get the scanner to work and there's no damage to the saved scans.

Given that my scanjet 4070 is almost a decade old, and the last software patch came out over 2 years ago, is it safe to assume that it's not exactly on the software engineers' radar to get it fixed any time soon?
Thanks!
Jon
