With Windows 11 don't use HP soft if you want scan !!

Thanks for these instructions. My HP Scan works well now.

The solution I've found for me is:

  1. Turn on the computer
  2. Once inside Windows turn on the printer and wait until it is listed
  3. Go to services and restart the Windows Image Acquisition Service

This allows scans every time.

I have the same issue when I upgraded to Windows 11.  HP downloaded a Universal Printer Driver and it allowed for the Duplexing and Scanning to work again.  The guy at the HP Help desk said I didn't buy the HP extended warranty and they would fix the issue once, and then I would be responsible.

I got a critical Windows Update last night, rebooted machine and nothing works with the HP Color Laser Jet MFP M479fdw now.

I deinstalled everything, and loaded the Universal and the Full blown, and get printer to work with duplexing, but nothing else will work.

I am like, this is ridiculous.  I have something due today that has to be scanned in.  I paid close to $1,000 for the printer and it is again broke after a Microsoft update for the OS 11.  I have used HP printers for 20 years, and never ever had as many problems as I have since Windows 11 OS.

Thank you FleischmannTV - although I had solved the problem myself to let me use HP Solution Centre, this is the first suggestion that has allowed me to use Windows Scan.

Must write it down now before I forget.

Hi, I had this same problem but running Windows 10 and an HP Envy 5540 printer/scanner. Tried all the on-line help but the scanner just wouldn't work. The 'Scan a Document or Photo' button on the HP Printer Assistant didn't work and the printer would not scan from the menu on it's own interface.

Tried everything and all the HP doctor stuff. Took 4 hours yesterday and 4 hrs again today. Pulled the power cable, waited, pressed Power button for a minute and plugged the printer direct to the wall outlet (it was in an extension). Reinstalled the basic driver software from Print/Scan Doctor and ... it works. Just printed and scanned ok. 🙂

Couldn't get Smart Scan app to work though. It installs but won't boot. The start screen comes on for a few seconds then just goes off again.  So now have 'HP Envy 5540 series : HP Printer Assistant' working. Funny though, it was working a couple of weeks ago then just stopped.

Probably because the same bug in WIA that is present in Windows 11 was just delivered to Windows 10 as part of a Windows Update!

Fleischmann's is really the quickest and easiest way to fix this problem. Even quicker than doing it in Device Manager. Of course (for me at least), it only fixes it until the next time I reboot. But it only takes a few seconds, especially as I now have a shortcut to the Services Console on my desktop!
