I tried installing a new HP cyan cartridge in my HP8100 OfficeJet Pro 8100, but the cartridge light carries on blinking. I was able to get a second cartridge from the same supplier, but that results in the same problem, and I am unable to use the printer.

When I put the old cartridge in (not manufactured by HP), the light stops blinking, but obviously(?) the estimated ink level shows zero, but I can print with it.

I've tried cleaning the contacts on the printhead, but to no avail.

PS I've also tried all sorts of combinations of printhead cleaning, turning the printer on and off, and doing resets.

PPS I've put the old cartridge back in, and hey presto, not only does the light not blink, but there is a small level of ink registering, and i'm now reluctant to go anywhere near it.

Any suggestions as to why it's so temperamental, particularly with the new HP cartridges?

Hi Trabsy,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I see that your HP Officejet pro 8100 thinks your new cyan ink cartridge is empty, and I am happy to help you!

I am glad you have done some troubleshooting already, I would also take a look through this ink cartridge failure guide. An 'Ink Cartridge Failure,' 'Incompatible Ink Cartridges,' or 'Ink Cartridge Problem' Error Message ....

Also, does the ink levels show any other colors are low or empty? Maybe all you have to do is replace them too.

If you have done all the steps in the guide, I provided, and no other cartridges are low or empty, please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. Country-language selector

Hope this information helps, and have a great day! Smiley Happy

I put the old cartridge back in and, for a while, the printer worked OK, but soon the ink in the cartridge ran out, and using HP AiO remote I get the message "Out of supplies". When I put the new HP cartridge, the message is "Cartridge Missing", Why does the printer recognize the non-HP cartridge as being there, but not the HP cartridge. I've tried two HP cartridges but with the same result. Any answer appreciated - otherwise, I may in the end have to get another printer, possibly a Canon.

Hi Trabsy,

Most likely you are having a problem with the printhead itself in the printer, especially if you have tried everything within the guide that I had provided.

In that case the next best step is to please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. Country-language selector.

Best regards. :generic:
