Hello @johnbp,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you have two copies of your HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer showing installed on your Windows 7 computer and you would like some assistance with removing the extra copy of the printer. I would like to assist you today with removing the duplicate printer from your computer. Can I please have you run through the steps below.

First, we need to figure out if both the HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer and the HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer (Copy 1) printers are linked to your HP Printer Assistant software for scanning abilities. If they are both linked and function perfectly than it doesn't matter which one we delete. However, if only one is linked than we need to delete the copy of the printer that is not linked to the software properly to avoid further issues.

Step 1: Check Software:

Can I have you open up the HP Printer Assistant software icon on your desktop. It should look something like this:

Printer Assistant desktop icon.png

Once you click on this icon:

If you're prompted to select either:

  • HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer
  • HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer (Copy 1)

Than this indicates that both copies of your printer are linked to the HP software and we can delete either as it wont affect the functions of your printer.

If the HP Printer Assistant opens without having to select a printer:

  • Than the HP software is only linked to one copy of your printer. Look at the top of the HP Printer Assistant window. It should show the name of your printer. Take note of the name and if it has (Copy 1) at the end of it or not.

Step 2: Delete Printer Duplicate:

1. Click on your Start menu

2. Select Devices and Printers

3. When the Devices and Printers folder opens, look for your HP Officejet printer.

4. We need to now delete the duplicate of your printer. The printer we delete will depend on what you found under Step 1. If the Printer Assistant software opened without you having to select a device than we must delete the copy of the printer that did not show at the top of the HP Printer Assistant.

5. Right click on the HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer that you need to delete and select the 'remove device' or 'delete' option.

Note: If you only see 1 copy of the HP Officejet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer in the Devices and Printers folder, right click on this device. Select 'Delete print Queue' and you should see two copies of your printer showing. Delete the Print Queue for the copy of the printer that you do not want.

Once the duplicate of your printer has been removed, please test printing to ensure that one copy of your printer shows and not two.

Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Should you need further support than please let me know what occurs when you click on the HP Printer Assistant. I look forward to hearing from you! 🙂

thanks, got it but assistant said everything was working fine, figured out the problem with printing on the web got it to work, by changing discription of what i were and what it wanted it to do. Printer seems to work fine but keep getting a trouble shooting comment from microsoft saying to reinstall the driver. Well did that 3 times and window still says it is a problem. So as long as the printer works fine will ignore the caution, unless you have any other suggestions.

thanks

Hello @johnbp,

Thanks for getting back to me regarding this issue. I'm happy to hear that the steps I provided assisted you with deleting the duplicate of your printer.

In regards to the Microsoft warning message in regards to your driver, I would suggest running the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix printing' issues for you. Should any driver, software, or connection conflicts be found than the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.

Please click here to download the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool.

Please respond to this post with the result of running the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool. Good luck! 🙂
