Thank you Draftsman. The "show or hide troubleshooter package" referred in MS kb3073930 does the trick of hiding the update.

A year on still the same **bleep** error message on my screen. I will throw the ffing HP printer in the bin and buy a more reliable product from Curry's! Enough of this **bleep**.
