Whenever I install a new HP ink cartridge HP 63XL, I get an incompatible ink cartridge message. If I install a HP 63 ink cartridge in the same printer, there is no problem. What gives? Why does it find the high yield  cartridge incompatible? I've tried two new HP 63 XL cartridges and I get the same response. Both purchases were from my local Staples store. Is Staples selling poor quality HP ink cartridges?

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Deskjet 3632 printer. I understand that you are getting incompatible ink cartridge error and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

 

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

  • Make sure the ink cartridges are correctly installed.
  • Clean the ink cartridge contacts.
  • Remove and then reinsert the ink cartridges again.
  • Restart the printer.
  • Align the ink cartridges.

Click here and refer the document to perform the above troubleshooting steps.

(Note: Though the title of the document is different, these steps should fix the issue.)

I have performed all of the Triubleshooting that you have recommended, and it still says that the cartridge is incompatible. Although, as soon as I put the low yield HP 63 cartridge in, the printer worked fine. So far, it only seems to have a problem with the HP 63 XL cartridge. I have tried two brand new HP 63 XL cartridges and both get the incompatible cartridge error.

I recommend you to update the firmware on the printer and check if it helps.
