Product: Envy 5540
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

If I buy a USB to ethernet adapter and hook the usb cable to the router using the adapter can the printer be on the network. There is no usb port on the router.

 

If that doesn't work, will a router with a usb port do the job.

It may or may not work, no guarantees.   A router with a USB port... no guarantees there too.   I would suggest connecting to your wireless router... wirelessly.
