I have refilled my ink cartridges but continue to get the Ink expired message and can't get the touch screen to do anything more than loop between that message.  This is the 1st time I have changed ink so the copier doesn't get a lot of use.  Please help.

Hey paulafm,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums! 🙂 I see you are using refilled cartridges in your HP Officejet 8500, and you are getting an error message that you are using expired cartridges.

I would like you to start troubleshooting here: Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-One Printer Series (A909)

You will notice Solution 1 Use Genuine HP Cartridges :

'HP recommends that you use genuine HP cartridges. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges or refilled HP cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the following solutions might not resolve your print quality issue.'

To get a better understanding take a look at the documents below:

Can I Refill The Ink In My HP Ink Cartridge?

&

HP Inkjet Print Cartridges vs. Refilled Cartridges

I hope this helps, if after changing the ink to genuine HP cartridges you still have print quality issue I suggest calling our technical support at http://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html

I do not have a print quality issue as I cannot print. The issue is that the touch screen will not bypass the 'expired ink' message'.  I am using the original HP ink cartridges (refilled) and they heads are clean and in perfect condition.  There is no 'OK' button on my 8500A-e all-in-one printer. I have unplugged it and that did not help. The 'more info' does not work but the 'return' arrow does.  Basically the problem seems to be that the screen not longer functions.  Would it lock itself due to the ink not being genuine HP ink- even though the cartridges are HP? That seems unlikely.  Is the chip in the cartridges at fault?  So if I buy new cartridges (which equal the price of a new printer) will it work again or is the problem in the touch screen control panel?

Thanks much for any help!!!

Hey @paulafm, HevnLgh has not been available, but I can help.

I understand you feel the printer's front panel may have locked up as a result of the cartridges but are unsure. Instead of replacing the cartridge to find out that the issue is the printer and not the cartridges, let's try something different. I suggest we attempt a forced initialization.

Please remove all of the cartridge, close the access door, then leave the printer on and unplug it. When you reconnect the power cable, I expect the printer will read something like, insert cartridges, or cartridge missing. At this point, please insert one cartridge at a time, put one in, close the access door, then see what the screen says before proceeding with the next cartridge.

If the Expired error doesn't return until after you install one particular cartridge I trust is safe to assume the issue is that individual cartridge and not the printer.

This may or may not work, but it could save you the cost of replacing the cartridges to find out the issue is the printer.

If this identifies the issue as a cartridge and replacing that cartridge resolves the issue, please be sure to mark your post as solved by clicking the Accept as Solution button below. Thanks. I hope this helps.

Cheers!
