I am trying to print on Legal size paper.  No problem adjusting the input paper tray to accept the legal paper but the output tray will only extend long enough to accept letter/A4.  I can slide the extension of the output tray in so that the vertical stop is folded down but then the paper falls all over the floor as it prints unless I stand there an manually catch it which isn't very convenient.  Is there any way to extend the output tray further so it will catch and hold legal size paper?

Hello @Amylou,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you would like assistance on how to pull out the output tray extender on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer for legal size paper. I would like to assist you with this today.

1. Grasp the handle on the front of the input tray, and then pull the tray towards you to open it.

2. Slide the paper width guides out as far as possible.

3. Insert a stack of unused, plain white paper (with the print-side down) in the center of the tray.

4. Slide out the paper width guides as far as possible. If you are loading larger-sized paper, pull out the input tray extender to lengthen the tray.

5. Push the tray back into the printer. On the legal setting the tray will not push all the way back into the printer.

6. Pull out the tray extender on the output tray. It will slide all the way out and there is a little plastic lip that you can flip upwards so it catches your letter or legal size media.

Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your output tray issues. Good luck! Smiley Happy

I tried your suggestion and succeeded in breaking off the piece at the end of the output tray. It still is too short for legal paper. Paper tray is just fine.  It is just the output tray that is supposed to catch the pages. Now I am really sick. It seems like such a simple task, but it did not work. Now, How do I get a new output tray? or at least the part to fix the end that broke off. I must be really dumb not to be able to extend the darn tray from letter to legal.

I kept trying assuming I would probably break the entire output tray, but finally realized the extension for legal paper is UNDER  the letter extension.

Any suggestions for how to repair or replace the little part at the end of the tray that broke off?
