I have similarly wasted about 4 hours trying to enable scanning to my new (HP) laptop.
I do not want to use HP Cloud. I want to scan directly to my laptop as I have been doing up to now.
Printing is wireless connected and works.
- Installed FULL software – fails Wireless connection
- Installed HP Print & Scan Doctor - fails Wireless connection / cannot communicate
- Connect via USB – success
- Change USB connection to Wireless – fail
- Uninstall / reinstall / reboot countless times
- Constantly fighting with ‘HP Smart’ installation
- Windows Scan & Fax / Windows Scan work
So I have given up, I am using Windows Scan which is so inferior to the HP software I have been using but I am not going to use a USB connection (and go back to the stone age)

Hi @Me97 and all,
Can try this standalone scan solution?
HP Scan Extended
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
(Copy the link address and and paste in a new window)
Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"
Hope that helps!

Correctly configured there should be no need to connect to cloud. The user guide explains the setup very clearly and it is good place to start
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do not work for HP nor speak for HP.
