Hello Miaschnauzer,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

Setting up the Deskjet 2542 with only an iPad is possible, it is just not the traditional way. To connect the Deskjet to the network, please follow the below steps.

  • Turn Wireless Direct on from the front panel button on the printer. (number 4).

Front Panel 2540.JPG

  • Connect the iPad to the printer network, Settings> Network> HP-Print-2540.
  • Open Safari and type this I.P address into the address bar, 192.168.223.1 and hit Enter.
  • Go to Network or Wireless and then Wireless Setup Wizard.
  • Select your network and enter the needed information.

The wireless light on the printer should go solid. Connect the iPad back to your network and try to print.

Let me know if this worked. 🙂

Hello Wokka,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

This printer's setup is a little harder than others regarding its network when you don't have a computer to setup the network information.

You will need to enable the Wireless Direct, a light should be on next to the button (#4 from my posted image above) before you can go to Setting>Network and connect to the HP-Print-**-Deskjet 2540. Once you are connected to the Wireless Direct, you should be able to follow my steps above to connect the printer to your network.

Try the steps and let me know the results. 🙂

Comcast replaced my router and I can't connect our HP 2542 printer with my iPhone 7+, iPad Air, or Samsung Galaxy Tablet model SM-T230NU.  I have followed instructions from Jerends back from 09/05/14 but can't do because the same reasons from this guy was having although I can't resolve my problem.

There is no Network in the Settings. When trying to connect to the IP address 192.168.223.1 I get an error message "Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding". Wireless Direct Is enabled on my printer.

@jetboat

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand your printer doesn't connect to the WiFi network anymore,

I'll be glad to help you out, however, for an accurate solution I will need more details:

What is the product number of your device? Use this link to find it: http://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c03754824

(Do not share any personal information such as serial number, email ID, phone number or address on a public forum for your safety).

Have you attempted any steps on your own before posting on the HP Forums?

Did you update the drivers and/or the firmware of the printer?

Which operating system are you using?

Please reply with the details for further assistance,

Meanwhile, please try with a wired connection and let me know if it works as a standalone using a copier as well.

Eager to help!

Feel free to post your query for any other assistance as well,

It's been a pleasure interacting with you and I hope you have a good day ahead.

If you wish to show appreciation for my efforts, mark my post as Accepted Solution.

And click on the Purple Thumbs up icon at the bottom of my comment.
