I see that you're curious about disabling fax mode on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer.  I would like to help.  Depending on what you're looking to configu re on the printer, your question has four answers which you may find useful.  

1.  Method One: Unplug the phone line from the back of your printer.  This will effectively disable the fax feature on your printer as this type of connectivity is essential for using fax.  

2.  Method Two: Turn off the Fax Sound volume.  From your printer's front panel do the following:

• Touch Fax
• Touch Basic Fax Setup
• Touch Fax Sound Volume
• Here you can choose Soft, Loud, or Off.  Naturally, 'Off' is going to disable the ringer.  

3.  Method Three: Turn Auto Answer Off.  From your printer's front panel do the following:

• Touch Fax Status Icon
• Touch Auto Answer and select Off.  This setting allows you to retain your current fax setup while granting you the ability to turn it off and on.   

4. Method Four: Disable the Fax Feature Entirely.  If the previous three methods aren't what you're looking for, there is a way to access a latent menu within your printer and completely disabling the feature on your printer so that no one else may use fax or set it up unless they're privy to these settings.  I never tend to post these steps in the Forum as mistakes or disabling the wrong features can cause a lot of headaches.  If you're interested in learning how to apply this step let me know and I'll send you a private message with the steps you'd need to get the job done.

I have an 8600 and 7612 and I too would like the secret to turning off the fax. (actually I want to remove the unessessary fax device which confuses all my collegues and should only appear after you have set up the fax and not before). Just to add, I do NOT understand why this information is not easily accessible, say in the user manual. But then I do Not understand why printers are so user unfriendly in all their aspects. Maybe I was never ment to understand. Although I am engineer, just not of printers.

when you log in to the officejetpro options screens it will have a box to set up fax and it will give you all the options in there as I had to do the same thing as have outside service for that for home business system.
