As it turns out, there was an update/patch from HP ditributed today that dsescribed the fix as helping to keep networked printers online!  Here's hoping it addresses our problem...

Where did you find this? I just checked for my printer (C7250) and there doesn't appear to be any udates for that.

Do you have a link for this patch (whichever printer..)

The update came automatically from HP via a small blue box in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that asks if I want the update or not.  There is no URL I know of, but I haven't looked for one.   I can only assume HP gets your email address or some other identity when you register the product with HP, then update notices come automatically.

However, after installing the update and trying my scanner again, it didn't help,  The scanner still malfunctioned.  The only way I can get my 4500n-z to scan from the printer is to unplug it off for a minute and restart it.  It works for a while and malfunctions again in a day or two.

When I installed the patch, I didn't restart my printer for the above test , but I have since then.  Maybe the printer needed to be restarted in addition applying the patch to the PC.  I will know in a day or two if the scanner is still working!

HP's automatic software update that was intended to "help keep printers on the network" did not help the cause.  After 24 hours the scanner on the printer was malfunctioning and the printer had to be unplugged for a minute and restarted in order to initiate a scan from the printer.  I doubt the problem is related to the network and the PC's, rather there is likely something wrong in the printer that allows it to drop out of sight for printing and causes our problem, scanning-initiated-at-the-printer, to fail.  I conclude this because the scanning dialogue at the printer console does not make it to the question "PDF or JPEG".  After selecting the PC to receive the scan, the scanner simply says "Starting Scan", but never does the scan.  Quite frankly, I suspect resolving this problem is a lost cause...

This method of backtracking from the laptop to the scanner worked like a charm.  Didn't know it was an option.  Now, I never have to worry about the "LCD" message again.  Thanks!

I was persuaded that the best approach to fixing the problem was to buy another printer. Since I hardly used the color printing feature of the old printer, I opted for an all-in-one laserjet. Big mistake.

The main feature that I was interested in was the 'scan from printer'. This doesn't exist on the low end laserjet mfp devices. You *have* to initiate the scan from the computer. WHAT??? Yes, even though the printer is connected over an ethernet cable, you have to go to the printer, insert the document, go back to the computer, start the scan, and then go back to the printer to fetch the document.

Second, less serious given the first problem is that, unlike the HP Solution Center software for the Photosmart printers, the equivalent software for the LaserJet printers has many fewer features and doesn't do the OCR to make PDFs searchable.

You would think that the Inkjet people in HP and the Laserjet people in HP work for two different companies.

If I had realized that the capabilities of LaserJets were so inferior to Photosmart printers, I would not have purchased the M1212nf MFP.

Does anyone know of a device that does the following:

* Prints documents in black and white (at least)

* Has decent scanning support that works (i.e. scan from the printer with less than five button presses, and can write searchable PDFs)

This ought to be a question where an HP rep could help.

I've had this heap of crap printer the C310 multiprinter for about a year and it really is just a money pit, piece of rubbish.

I've never spent so much money on ink cartridges and now this problem that HP don't seem to want to fix.

Like most people I don't have money to thow around but the amount I'm spending on ink cartridges and the time involved messing around trying to get this thing to work is a joke.

I was told to use low resolution or print in grey scale for my images to save ink, how pointless is that!

I was then sent a full set of ink cartridges and a new print head made no difference at all!

My old HP PSC2175 printer would print out just as good images but the inks would last forever I could print out so many pages, then this heap.

Lets be right this has to be done on purpose so HP can make money out of the ink sales!

HP you are complete crap and you deserve to go out of business!

I tried what someone else posted but it said I still need to upgrade.
