Hello,
After install the new firmware that i discribe below my printer don't work if the ethernet cable is plugned, it don't go ready and go into initialing loop, well resume it can't be used on network anymore it's still working but only by USB cable. We are wainting for a new firmware to fix this problem.

I got my HP 1217 working again by powering on while holding down the "X" and "copy" keys until 'Permanent Storage Init.' appeared - keep holding until next message appears (Welcome to HP?)
This seems to reset to factory settings.
I had to re-add the printer to my PC.

I realize this is an old thread, but I have just joined the greatly disappointed HP customers experiencing this operational problem with the M1217, and sick to my stomach at HP's response.
I bought this printer less than one year ago, almost 11 months ago now. It has had such light use that I haven't even gotten through the partial toner cartridge that came with it. It stopped working about a month ago, stuck in that initializing loop. I figured it had a short circuit, and that I'd better get it to Best Buy where I purchased it before the one-year anniversary of my purchase date.
Went there today. Geek Squad informed me that they no longer carry this printer so can't swap it for me; they won't fix it (too much trouble and they'd rather me buy a new one) so I could either just buy a new one or turn to HP and its warranty for help with this one.
Surprised at that lame response -- they won't stand behind a product they sell even for just one year?? -- I called the HP number they gave me, customer service/warranty support. The lady on the phone informed me that i was already out of warranty and that I could purchase additional warranty time and THEN we could talk about whether the printer could be fixed. So I guess I could fork over more money toward an unworking machine in the mere hope that they'd have a working solution but I wouldn't know until paid more money. Either that, or do the VERY anti-environmental thing and buy yet another electronic printing device in less than a year from when I bought my last one.
Not once did the warranty lady say anything about this being a known issue for well over a year.
I'm so disgusted with this response, and I'm even more sick to know now that this was a KNOWN issue when I bought this printer in August 2013. Why didn't HP pull it off shelves if it didn't work properly?? They knowingly sold me a printer that had a VERY limited useful life. How could they do that??
I am a Palo Alto girl, and have always been fiercly loyal to HP and its products. But this has broken my faith in the company, its products and its integrity.
Shame on you HP. Shame on you. -Kimberley.
