LaserJet Pro 200 m251nw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have just upgraded to Windows 10. The printer would not work, so I downloaded the new drivers from HP.

I keep trying to install the file, but it gets to 99% and says there is a fatal error.

It says " An install operation took too long to excute. This is a fatal error preventing product use."

Does anyone know what to do to correct this problem?

Hey @David343,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see that you are having some issues with installing the software for your Laserjet m251nw Printer on your Windows 10 PC. I can help you with that.

To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done:

  1. If the printer is connected to your PC through a USB cable, remove it.
  2. Close all programs you have open.
  3. In your search bar type in cmd and open Command Prompt.
  4. Type in "msiexec /unregister" (no quotes) and press Enter.
  5. Type in "msiexec /regserver" (no quotes) and press Enter.
  6. In your search bar type in msconfig and open MS Config.
  7. Click on the Services tab.
  8. Click on Hide All by Microsoft.
  9. Click on Disable All.
  10. Click on the Start Up tab.
  11. Click on Disable All.
  12. Click on OK and restart your PC.

Please let me know the results after following the above. If you are able to install your drivers, please click on Accept Solution. if you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

The instuctions did not work. I still got the same result.

Also on step 10 there was nothing to disable.

When I did step 12, restarting the computer, doesn't that reset the comuter? ie reset everything we disabled?

I always ran the driver file after the computer restarted in step 12.

The file I downloaded for drivers was:  LJ-Pro-200-Color-M251-Full-Solution_15188

When you see the popup message to restart your computer, it powers down the computer, restarts the computer, and finally restarts the PC. It would not undo everything we did, no.

So why isn't it working?

Since I have uninstalled the hp software for the printer and the new software will not load, I don't think most of those instructions will help much.

I will try them tonight when I get home. Plus I am leary of loading other softwareon the computer. I just deleted abiut 5 programs that were loaded saying they can help with the problem or at least analysis the problem but were actually trying to sell me another program.

This should not be this hard for us non geek people.

I thought this was HP support

It is, however sometimes it is easier to troubleshoot over the phone. When you do that, if necessary phone agents can access your PC and see things that could get missed over the forums.
