I'm having serious trouble with trying to setup a HP Laserjet M1120 MFP device on an iMac i7 running OSX Lion. The printer driver installs fine from Preferences > Print & Scan. Printing works from the iMac, and from another networked computer. However, the scanning functionality doesn't show up anywhere and I cannot get it to work from the iMac or the other computer. I've tried with Acrobat X Pro, Preview and Image Transfer apps.

Ok, so I downloaded the HP Laserjet Full Feature Software and Driver from here, just to notice that I ran into more problems. When running the HP Laserjet M1120 Series.pkg package, the HP Setup Assistant app stops with a popup that says "You must have administrative privilegies to configure a device." This is a bit surprising since I have just entered my admin password, in addition to the fact that there is only one user account on the computer, which obviously has admin rights. Furthermore, it appears that the setup program actually does install the HP software package, since I can find apps such as HP Director and HP Scan in the Applications folder. Needless to say, running these apps only results in a popup saying "No scanners are found." Acrobat shows the printer name in the File > Create > PDF from Scanner dialog, but hitting the Scan button results in a popup saying "Error while interacting with scanner: the selected scanner was not found."

I have unistalled the HP software with the uninstall option, and re-installed. I have also tried the "Reset printing system" option from OSX's Preferences > Print & Scan > right-clicking the printer list. So... what gives? Is there a way for me to check whether the scanner is actually working and/or if this is a HW problem? Or is this driver just not compatible with the current OSX Lion (I have 10.7.3)? IMO the USB connection should be fine since I'm able to print normally.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

The Driver you installed is intended for Mac OS X 10.5 or lower, and is not compatible with Lion.

Compatibility: Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.5, Mac OS X

Officially, The M1120 model is partially compatible with Lion and provide print functionality only by the software provided through Apple Software Update...

You may try the following workaround, although i cannot guarantee it will work and may not be stable as expected:

  1. Enter System Preferences > Print & Scan, select the M1120 printer ant then click the Minus sign to remove.
  2. Follow the Full Feature Software installation by skiping the Setup Assistant till the installation is complete.
  3. Perform the following steps in order to provide the Setup Assistant the right permissions to complete:
    1. Open Terminal from the Utilities folder
    2. Type “sudo “ (with space) in the Terminal.
    3. Locate the HP Setup Assistant in folder Applications/HP LaserJet Software
    4. Right-click (CTRL + Left from the Mac keyboard) the HP Setup Assistant and choose “Show Package Contents.
    5. Open the “Contents” folder and then click “MacOS” folder. It should contain the Unix Executable File of HP Setup Assistant.
    6. Drag the HP Setup Assistant (Unix Executable File) into the Terminal and press enter.
Terminal will ask for the password of the user.
  4. After writing the password press Enter Button.
  5. Now follow the Setup Assistant Steps to complete.

Yeah, thanks a lot! This procedure solved my scanning problem (OS X 10.7.2).

Hopefully, an official driver for OS X higher than 10.5 will be available soon...

Best, P.

Sorry for my late reply. Indeed, this is a working solution, thank you. Please publish a working driver for Lion soon.

Hi,

I am sorry to inform you that no official solution will be provided for scanning using the latest Mac OS X,

Hance only printing is supported already since the previous Mac OS X 10.6.

Additionally, the document below clearly indicate that only printing is supported by the OS:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c02925114#c02925114_PrintOnl...

Hope that clarifies,

Shlomi
