Laserjet M1212nf MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I was trying to send a fax but keep getting an error message that there is "No Dial Tone" even though the machine is connected to a fully functional phone line. I fed the fax to be sent through the document feederr and entered the fax number through the keypad. I tried two different phone lines which are both working lines (able to make phone calls from those lines) but still keep getting the same error message.

Printing and sanning are OK on teh MFP.

Are these line analog lines or other. In other words if you connect a 1 line phone to the jack on the wall and pickup the phone do you get dial tone or do you connect a phone to the line and have to press a button on the phone to get dial tone.

If the phone is correct then:

The 2 wire fax cable should be connected to the 2nd port from the bottom of the printer.

Run the fax test:

  • Touch the setup, (wrench) arrow to service, OK, select run fax test.

You should get 4 passes.

If anything fails report back.

Ran the fax test as suggested. The results are

Fax Hardware Tes - Pass

Fax connected to Active Telephone Wall Jack - Fail

Phone Cord Connected to Correct Port on Fax - Skipped

Dial Tone Detection - Skipped

After that I also removed the phone cord end connected to the Printer and plugged it inot a phole and was able to make a normal phone call. So the phone line is not a problem.

When you pickup the phone do you hear a dial toner, yes or no. If you take another telephone wire and plug the phone into the other jack on the printer do you get dial tone and can you make a call. The test is indicating the printer does show the fax line as being connected. Try the other jack on the printer just in case and run the test again. If the same results either you do not have an analog phone line or the fax/modem on the printer has an issue. Is this a home 1 line phone or a office phone that has more than I line capability.

Analog lines, also referred to as POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), support standard phones, fax machines, and modems. These are the lines typically found in your home or small office. Digital lines are found in large, corporate phone systems.

Sorry if I did not give sufficient information.

Yes it is an analog line. I do hear a Dial tone when I plug a phone into the line and pickup the phone. The phone line has always been connected into the same port on the printer and the fax on the printer has been working fine till a couple of days ago.

So when I saw the "No Dial Tone" error like you, I too thought that the phone line could be faulty.  But having tested it on a phone and found no fault with it, I suspect that it could be the fax/modem on the printer that could be the issue.

In fact I have a second phone line at home which also I connected to the printer and tested but with no luck. I was still getting the same error "No Dial Tone"

Thank you for time. Much appeciated. I am unfortunately in Australia. Let me see if I can get the formatter board here.

Everybody has been advising me to buy a new MFP as it is cheaper to buy a new one rather than repair an older model like the m1212nf. But I prefer not to create more e-waste and would rather repair it if I can.

Thank you.
