I am getting an error message on the display "scanner error 13 turn off then turn on" on my M225dw. I have cycled power as instructed and performed a permant storage initialization but error message remains.

The printer is getting the scanner error 13 message during the initialization process not while trying to scan. I fixed it myself by taking the scanner glass off and realigning the scanner in the scanner bed.

@B-man1 wrote:Huddlesj, thanks for the tip. I've tried everything except that, unsuccessfully. Can you give some steps on how to realign the scanner? thx!
I removed the 9 screws holding the scanner glass down plus 2 screws from the hinges. I simply picked up and reset the scanner on the track. That allowed the scanner to advance all the way across the scanner bed during intialization and cleared the scanner error 13 from the display.

Thanks, I've seen this recommended approach in responses to other posters with similar problems. It did not work, my printer is frozen in the initiatlization stage. I use a Macbook Pro, with the OS X El Capitan v10.11.6, & I've updated the latest driver from the HP support site (M225_M226_Series_FW_Update_20160418.dmg. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to initiate the implementation, when I try to open the file the "open" pop-up appears briefly then disappears rather than initiating the installation. Could the problem be the printer's outdated firmware and, if so, any ideas on why I can't activate the installation from the file download?

I started out with the Scanner Error 13 problem (but was still able to print). After seeing posts wtih similar problems, I tried the 'turn off-turn on" suggestion but it didn't help. The printer is now stuck in the initiatlization stage. I noticed there is a newer version of firmware for the printer on the HP support site, so I downloaded it. Unfortunately, although the download shows as 'complete', when I try to open the file it opens briefly then quits rather than initiating the installation process. I have a MacBook Pro, running the OS X El Capitan v10.11.6 operating system. Any suggestions?

I've had 6 or so that get stuck at the initialization stage. After calling HP support they had me try holding down the power button and the bottom right of the display simulaneously to initiate a permanent storage initialization. If the printer does not advance past the initilization screen after that, then the main board is bad.
