For unknown reason my scan icon on the desktop disappeared.  Checked Recycle Bin and not there.  OS is Win7Pro.

I have tried re-installing software but get to 99% and was terminated because of time.  D/L software from HP Site, same result.

Have reviewed Forum messages and see that this has occurred to others but I am unable to find replies or solutions that I can try.  The Driver Software Window indicates "All software ready to use."  If I can learn the file name that will open the scanner, I can then copy and paste it on the desktop and get back to work!  HELP!

Thanks again for all that information cmthomas.

So the full software still isn't installing. That is why the scan software isn't working.

Well I am stubborn and I will get this working one way or another for you. Smiley Happy

I believe what is happening, is the software isn't installing the proper printer driver. We need follow this document during the install. As soon as you connect the USB cable follow the steps to update the printer driver before you get the error. A Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation.

You will unfortunately again, want to remove the USB cable, run the uninstall and reinstall again, but follow the document so the software won't time out.

Do a msconfig, to turn off any startup programs that might be interfering with the installation.

Click on start, in the search box type in run, enter, then type in msconfig, click OK.

Click the Services tab. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box. Click Disable All, and then click OK.

Then click on the start up tab at the top. Click on disable all.

Reboot the computer.

Temporarily turn off any Antivirus software.

Then run the installation again. Right click on the install and select Run as Administrator.

Follow the above document to update the driver, please. Smiley Happy

Test the printer.

Then go back into msconfig and enable the All Microsoft Services and enable all on the start up tab. Turn the Antivirus software back on again.

Let me know how you make out.

Thank You.

Hi @cmthomas

I see by your post that you no longer had the HP Scan shortcut, you uninstalled and reinstalling the software you are getting to 99% then the install timed out. I can help you with this.

Most likely the print driver is already installed and you can print.

You can try to reinstall the scan software separately to see if that will resolve the issue.

Go to start, computer, right click on the CD for the printer installation and left click on open.
Open the setup folder, product folder, and then Scan_App folder.....HPScanLJM.....msi -
right click and select install or you might just be able to just double click on the hpscan.exe to extract the files.

If it opens the scan software, then you don't have to continue the steps listed below.

Then Go to start, computer, c:, program files or program files x86, HP, HPljm1530 mfp series, bin, look for hpscan.exe and right click and send to desktop. This will create a shortcut on the desktop again.

Try and open the shortcut on the desktop for the HP Scan software.

Usually when you get the time out error, you would do these steps in the document, right after connecting the USB cable. A Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation. After this is done the installation should continue.

How is the printer connected? (USB/Ethernet)

Please provide in detail the results if you are still having issues.

Have a nice day!
Thank You.

Hi Gemini02.  Thanks for your assistance.  I wish that I could use the "S" word (solved) but such is not the case.

I got as far as creating an icon on the desktop.  However, when I clikc on it I get a message "The HP LJM 1530MFP Series Scan was not found."

I walked through the procedure again to see if I could find a HP LJM 1530 MFP Series Scan.  If it is there, it has eluded me.

BTW, during my most recent effort to re-install I received a window named "Driver Software Installation."  Each of the 6 files list, including HP LJ M1530MFP Series Scan was marked "ready to use."   However, when I looked in C;\ProgramFiles\HP\HPLJM1530MFP Series\bin\  I found an application named HP Scan.  I did not try clicking on it.

I have checked the printing device and it is working fine on copying, printing from computer and faxing.  Only scanning is missing and is desparately needed.  Sorry to be such a pest.

Hi cmthomas,

No worries. :generic:

It might be named HP Scan instead of hpscan.exe. You might have to try a couple different ones listed in the path while going to start, computer, c:, program files or program files x86, HP, HPljm1530 mfp series, bin.

Let us take a look, to see why you still can't scan.

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (), and then click Control Panel. The Windows Control Panel opens.
  2. Click System and Maintenance, and then click Device Manager. The Device Manager window opens.
  3. Click View, and then select Show hidden devices on the drop-down menu. A list displays in the Device Manager window.
  4. Open imaging devices, it should list the printer name there, if it says pnp, right click and update the driver.
  5. If the printer isn't listed, then click on Action across the top and scan for new hardware.
  6. From the Update Driver Software screen, click Browse my computer for driver software, and then click Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer. The Add Printer Wizard screen displays.
  7.  From the Add Printer Wizard screen, select your printer driver from the list, and then click Next. The driver installation process begins. (select the printer driver, not the universal driver)

If the printer is listed properly under imaging devices, temporarily turn off the Antivirus Software to see if that is causing the conflict.

Try scanning from Paint.

Download and run the Print and Scan Doctor if the issue persists. It will diagnose the issue and might automatically resolve it. Find and fix common printer problems using HP diagnostic tools for Windows?

Please let me know the results.

Thank You.

Me again!  No solution yet.  I was out of town for a week thus the delay in responding.  However, see following:

1.  Windows Firewall - OFF

2.  MS Essentials Virus Checker - OFF

3.  New USB Cable installed.

4.  All prior downloads of HP files deleted.

5.  All references to HP on my computer Uninstalled or deleted.

6.  Rebooted computer.

7.  Attempted to download software from HP site.

8.  Driver software installation program window listed items show "ready to use."

9.  Install software window indicator moved from "Prepare to Install" to "Connect the Product" (done)

10. Watched the progress bar remain on 0% for an hour.  Then reverted to User's CD that came with device.

11. Followed instructions in your last message.  Device Manager included "imaging device" and when opened showed the           correct product model.

12. Right clicked on model to update drivers - reported "all existing drivers up to date."

13. Checked "let me pick drivers" and found HPLJM1530MFPSeries Scan and HP PNP Scan Null.

14. Returned to CD and opened installer.  Found icon as HP Scan LJM1530.  One click and it was on desktop.

15.   DEEP BREATH! HOPEFULLY THE END IS IN SIGHT!

16.  No such luck.  A click on the icon produced a window message "The HPLJM1530MFPSeriesScan not found."

17. Retired for liquid refreshment from a dark brown bottle!

18. Investigation of the icon revealed that it directed to c:\ProgramFiles\HP\HPLJM1530MFPSeries\bin\HPScan.exe

19. I hopefully concluded that HPScan.exe was what I ws looking for.  A search from the Start window not successful.

20. Depression level increasing by the hour.

Please, my patient friend, do not give up on me now!   Is there any way that you can access my computer?  I cannot understand how HPScan.exe cannot be located on either the CD or the site D/L.

Thanks for all the information provided cmthomas.

The scan drivers are installed, but it doesn't look like the full scan software is being installed.

Just do a search for "hpscan ",  then try and open it the HP Software.

If it opens then you can go back and create the short cut for HP Scan.

If you are still having issues, then boot the computer into safemode.

Disconnect the USB cable.

Uninstall the printer software. Uninstalling the Printer Software.

Boot back into Windows.

Clear the temp folder. How To Manually Clean Out The Temp Folder In Windows 7.

Then disable all the start up programs and temporarily turn off the Antivirus Software. How to use MSCONFIG .

Click on the start up tab and click disable all.

Run the downloaded drivers again. HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer Drivers.

Test the scanning.

Then you will need to go back in and enable the start up programs and turn the Antivirus Software back on again.

Let me know the results.

Thank You.

The news is not good.  I tried everything exactly as suggested.  Twice.

Prior to doing that I searched the entire HD for hpscan.  I came up with a similar hit HPScanExt.HPScan_exe

I traced it to its location which was in c:\Users\CMT (my initials). There is nothing else in that folder that relates to HP. I double clicked on it and a window appeared indictaing that there was no prpogram associated with the file so it could not be opened.  I looked at the programs suggested but none of them made any sense.

I can easily copy and paste it somewhere in the downloaded HP Program if I just knew where to paste it.  Please keep in mind that there is no indication (at least to me) that what has been downloaded has been installed.

I then moved to your suggestion #2.  Again, I followed directions without a problem until your last item, D/L the drivers program (which I did from the HP Website to assure that I was getting the most recent info).  The download installer was activated and the drivers window opened allowing me to watch 7 items in green circles load without a problem.

Then, the BIG dowload began to run.  The progress bar crawled across the screen reaching 99% in the usual time.  I then waited for about 5 minutes at 99% until it aborted due to a time out.  I wish to emphasize that the indicator on the left side of the Installer Window clicks to the second item indicating that downloading is taking place but it has NEVER moved to the next step which is the important function called INSTALL.

I do not know if what I need is hidden in that last missing 1% of the download but I am suspicious.

Is the existence of HPScanExt.HPScan_exe what we are looking for?  If so, please tell me where it should be located so that I can see if that is a solution.

I am quite concerned about this 99% cut out.  We may solve this problem but I am still left with a problem of installing the software that came with the device that I paid for.  Something is wrong.  I have not searched the Boards for 99% failure but I will bet that something is there.

My hair was completely gray before this problem occurred.  I hope that I have not caused your hair to turn gray!

Anxiously awaiting to hear from you.

Gemini, I cannot thank you enough but they limit me to only one Kudo!

It took several runs at it to get it right.  I needed a 14 y.o. computer whiz but all that I had to work with was a 77 y.o. addled brain!

I have preserved copies of all posts and replies so that I will have a background if the problem arises again.

THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!  THANK YOU!
