Thank you so much Jack. I am using Windows 10 when I downloaded and tried to install the driver file, it extracted all the files and stopped. As suggested above , I went to temp folder and looked for Hpsetup.exe file in that folder and double-click to run, which installed the entire package including the scanner and prompted me to configure the fax as well. Just amazing. Thanks Jack 🙂

Here is the actual solution for installing on Win 10
1. Plug in USB cable between computer and printer with LaserJet M1212nf MFP turned OFF
2. Turn on LaserJet M1212nf MFP (computer is already on). You will notice in the lower right that a new USB device has been detected
3. Look in the Windows File Explorer (the yellow manilla folder in tool bar on bottom)
3. Click on the .exe file, I think is is SmartStart)
4. The software installs
5. Note that the "E" drive (or if E drive is already taken, whatever drive it is on your system) will DISAPPEAR after installation
Bottom line:
This is how you install this Printer/Copier/Scanner in Windows 10 and get full functionality.
Explanation:
You may as well ignore the other answers. Maybe they work...this is the sure thing.
The setup is stored on the LaserJet M1212nf MFP itself and will kick in after the USB is plugged in and the printer powered up.
