Hello,
Recently I had to uninstall and install again drivers for my printer since Windows went crazy and did not let the printer accept Word document to print. But when installing it shows MSIExec error (image below). I tried to uninstall all the printer goodies (apps and help center), tried to clean registers manually with regedit and tried to change data USB connector. No success.
Since I live in Czech Republic, use czech version of Windows and czech installer, the text shows in czech. The important is below.
What's that error kind of and what does the return code mean? How to fix it?
Using printer LaserJet 100 color MPF M175a on Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit edition...
Please, help quickly, I need to print some important document...

Hey @Polda18,
Generally the error 'an install operation took too long to execute' is related to system files on your actual computer. There should be no reason you would need to increase the RAM on your computer. Cleaning up the registry is not a bad idea but I'm going to suggest a few more steps first under your normal User Account.
Step 1: Install Using HP Smart Install:
1. Press the Power button or switch to turn off the product, if it is not off already.
2. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer, if you already connected it.
3. Press the Power button or switch to turn on the product.
4. Reconnect the USB cable to the product and to the computer
The HP Smart Install program should start automatically. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
Should this also fail, please proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Disable Smart Install:
- On the front panel of your printer select the 'Setup' button (the wrench)
- Under the Setup menu right arrow over to Service Menu and select OK
- Under Service Menu right arrow to 'Smart Install' and select OK
- Under Smart Install please turn OFF this feature and select OK
Once Smart Install is disabled, proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Run a Selective Startup on the Computer:
- Click on your Start menu and in the 'search programs and files' box type msconfig and hit enter
- A System Configuration Utility box will now open. Under the 'general' window select 'Selective Startup' and only uncheck 'Load Startup Items'
- Click on the 'Services' tab at the top
- At the very bottom select the checkbox for 'Hide all Microsoft Services'
- Select 'Disable All' on the right
- Select Apply and then OK and restart your computer when prompted
Step 4: Run an SFC /SCANNOW:
This is a scan that will run on your computer. Should it identify any system corruption it will tell you. Should the scan request that you insert your Operating System disk it does indicate that you have a corruption of your actual computer and your Operating System will need to be reinstalled.
- Go to your Start menu and type CMD
- CMD will populate as an option above, right click on this and 'run as admin'
- When Command Prompt opens type sfc /scannow and hit enter
- Allow the scan to complete and take note of any errors it may fine
- Restart your computer once the scan is complete
Step 5: Run Windows Updates:
Please ensure that all your Windows Updates have been completed.
Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button
, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.
If any updates are found, click Install updates.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Once these steps are complete try to install your software and drivers again. Please let me know if these steps resolved the issue. Should you end up getting any other error messages please let me know. Good luck! 🙂

Hey @Polda18,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the 'MSI Fatal Error: 1612' you get when installing your HP LaserJet Pro 100 color MFP M175nw. Just so you are aware, the Fatal Error 1612 that you are receiving during install on your Windows 7 32 bit computer is generally related to the installation source for your printer not being available. I'm going to suggest some troubleshooting steps below to resolve this.
Please disconnect your USB Cable for these steps.
Step 1: Latest Version of .Net Framework:
Please click the following link to ensure you're running the latest version of Microsoft .NET Framework : Microsoft .NET Framework 4
Step 2: Unregister and Reregister the Microsoft Windows Installer:
- Click on your Start menu
- In the Start menu type CMD in the 'search programs and files' box. CMD will now populate near the top, just right click on CMD and 'run as administrator' .
- When the Command Prompt opens type: msiexec /unregister and hit enter
- Next type: msiexec /regserver and hit enter. Close the window.
Step 3: Clear the %temp% Files:
- Open your Start menu and in the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter.
- When the Temp folder opens select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard
- Once everything is highlighted in the Temp folder select 'Delete' on your keyboard to delete the files within the Temp folder. No files and folders on your actual computer will be removed. This will only delete Temporary files. If a file is still be used by a program on your keyboard you will get the pop up to 'skip' the item.
- Once the Temp files are deleted close the window
- On your Desktop, right click on the Recycling Bin and select Empty Recycling Bin
Step 4: Run a Selective Startup on the Computer:
- Click on your Start menu and in the 'search programs and files' box type msconfig and hit enter
- A System Configuration Utility box will now open. Under the 'general' window select 'Selective Startup' and only uncheck 'Load Startup Items'
- Click on the 'Services' tab at the top
- At the very bottom select the checkbox for 'Hide all Microsoft Services'
- Select 'Disable All' on the right
- Select Apply and then OK and restart your computer when prompted
Step 5: Reinstall the Printer:
- Please click the following link for the Full Feature Software and Drivers for your product: HP LaserJet Pro Series Full Solution Software and Driver
- Select Download on the website and allow your download to run
- Once the download is complete it will extract to 100%
- After extraction, the installer will launch
- Run through the step-by-step installation screens to install your printer.
- Only plug in your USB Cable when prompted by the installation.
Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your issue. Good luck! 🙂

Hi,
thank you for your reply, but your steps did not work for me, the installation of the printer crashed again 😞
I may reinstall the msiexec rather than plain re-register, otherwise I will use my laptop for printing...

Hey @Polda18,
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I'm sorry to hear that the steps I've provided failed to resolve your issue. Reinstalling the msiexec is not a bad idea to try. You did mention that you may just use your laptop for printing, but be aware that I always have additional troubleshooting steps to try.
If you want to give a quick step a try I would suggest unlocking the hidden Administrator account and installing under there. This will also help prove that whatever is causing the error is related to your user account. To do this please follow the steps below.
How to Unlock Admin Account:
- Go to your Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD
- CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'
- Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:yes and hit enter
- Next, close CMD and restart your computer
- When your computer comes on log into the new account that should show. It will be called Administrator and will not have a password on it.
- If your computer automatically logs into your account after restart than go to your start menu click the arrow beside 'shutdown' and choose 'switch user'. Now log into the Administrator account we just unlocked
- Under the Administrator account download and install the drivers: HP LaserJet Pro Series Full Solution Software and Driver
- If everything installs fine, log out of this account and back into your normal user account. All the Software and Drivers for your product should show installed now on your account.
If everything works fine, you will want to Hide the Administrator account.
- Go to your Start menu and under the 'search programs and files' box type CMD
- CMD will populate as a search option above, just right click on it and 'run as administrator'
- Once CMD (Command Prompt) opens, type net user administrator /active:no and hit enter
- Next, close CMD and restart your computer
Please let me know if the new account made any difference for you. Good luck! 🙂

Thank you for nice idea, but although this one does not work for me 😞
It looks in non-existing folder in C: drive (HP followed by string of hex numbers), maybe that's the reason why it's not working. I'm not sure it's caused by msiexec or the installation package that forgot to place a resource here, the original launch area is from %temp% dir.
I'm slowly getting upset since if nothing will work properly I will need to use my laptop with slower Windows Vista that seems to work fine with the drivers...
//EDIT: I found a solution to the MSIExec 1612 error, which worked for me, the prepare for installation passed through, however the installation proccess was too long since connection reached 99% and didn't go further, some time it stay at 99% and then give back the error that "the install proccess was too long". What does this mean? Should I increase RAM, already at 3GB, or tidy up registry and other old system entries?

Hey @Polda18,
I'm happy to hear that everything installed for you. However, it is odd that your HP Scan software is missing. Unfortunately, the HP Scan software is not something that you can download separately from the HP Full Feature Software and Driver package. I'm going to provide you with a document that discusses how to scan on Windows 7. It also gives the directories under the Start menu where HP Scan is located. Try the steps in this document to see if the Scan software is actually loaded and working.
Scan from Windows 7 With the Full Feature HP Software for HP LaserJet Multifunction Printers
Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your scan issues. Good luck!

If there are already scanner drivers installed, Windows seems to be unable to locate it 😞 I have 5 Mpx camera with flash on my mobile, so it's not so much important. The installation said the scanner was successfuly installed, I don't know why it does not want to scan. Anyway I thank you for your help, now I know how to solve troubles with installation 🙂
