Same issue with me.  Called HP.  After having me go through all of the troubleshooting (same troubleshooting I already did on my own), they determine that my printer was bad.  Only a few months out of warranty.  The tech got his supervisor on the phone.  The supervisor said that since I've been such a long cutomer of HP, he would give me a big discount on a 8600 Premium.  The price he gave me was significantly more than what I could get that model on Amazon.  When I pointed that out, he told me that Amazon is probably seilling me a used printer, even though it's clearly advertized as new.  Seriously, you're going to try to mis-lead me into thinking that you're giving me a good deal, then bash a very reputable company?  Clearly there is a known issue with this model, and clearly HP is not doing a very good job at keeping their customers.  Crappy product and even worse support.  I'm done with HP.

Throw it off a bridge!

Buy another non-HP printer.

Drop it off for e-waste.

Those happen to be my exact plans this evening. 🙂

I still have my Epson 777-i from about 10 years ago. Color match is so-so but it still works!

Got a new 3540 all-in-one to replace the POS HP.

that is exactly the model I'm planning on buying.  Thanks for the tip.

I have the same problem.  Model # N911A. I hope the printhead is not expensive.  Thanks.

I have not had my printer that long either, and I am getting the same message.  I feel that these printers should be recalled and customers given new printers.  There is no way that these many customers are having the same issue without this being a defect, and if HP is a company who wants to keep its reputation, and establish and keep loyal customers, HP needs to make go on these printers.

HP needs to make good on these defective printers.

Too many customers are having the same problem with the 8600 printer generating the message Missing or Failed Print Head, and have not had the printers long.

The printer has to be defective, and should be recalled, and the customers given a new printer.

I believe that we all need to report this issue to our local television station.  I know in my state we have a channel that broadcast this type of issue to make other people aware.

We need to make other customers aware how many of us who are having the same issue before they purchase this printer.

Sound great. I have not used the printer since I posted my same issue I Jan 2014. I bought a new Epson one. Still kept the 8600 waiting on people join force & belief that this is definitely a 'national' recall product & company needs 2 be responsible & reimburse our hard working $. Pls keep me posted when 2 declare a recall.
Shame on HP is keeping silent on their bad product with these many complaints.
