Hi franconov,
HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor. HP recommends that you download and install the Print and Scan Doctor any time you need to troubleshoot a problem with your HP printer from the link below.
Let me know what errors you receive?

I have a J4580 on a PC running Windows XP SP3. I am having similar problems.
When I try to scan from the front panel, I get "No scan options. Refer to device documentation to troubleshoot."
I tried the HP Doctor, fixing scan problems. It hung up on "front panel test". All green above that. How can I proceed?
I was able to scan using MS Paint.
One other thing: I have a "HP Solution Center" icon on my desktop. In the past, I have used that shortcut to run the scanner. But the last couple of months, even though I have been able to do scans that way, I kept getting a box pop up which says there is a missing file and I should insert the disk. The only disk I have (that came with the printer) does not have the missing file on it. I would just keep hitting "cancel" in this popup window, which seemed to operate independently from the scanner program, and I could get the scan done. Does this info help you?

No errors, simply scanner doesn't exist. When trying to install drivers and sofware (win7pro-64bit) the applications says:
-000000000004976640|s|Now launching=X:\hpzms01.exe-m dot4wrp40 - I XXX f "X:\hpwins26.dat" - Validate No Dat" - Validate No Error message received: There was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete these installation. X:\CIOUM64.msi failed with return code 1603. MSIInstall() failed with 1603. Exit code=1603

If you try to copy, does the lamp move across the bed and does the light come on?
If I have solved your issue, please feel free to provide kudos and make sure you mark this thread as solution provided!
Although I work for HP, my posts and replies are my own opinion and not those of HP
