OfficeJet Pro 8720

My brand new 8720 uses the wireless to connect to the network via a static IP address. All is well and several computers can access it.

However after period of time, and if a computer loses the MAC address of the printer ( due to reboot or sleep or using the arp -d command ) then the printer appears offline.

Further investigaation shows that if a computer ( Win or Linux ) removes the arp entry for the printer, then when ping the printer, the arp request is ignored by the printer. Thus the ping will fail. However a computer is used that still has an arp cache then the ping works.

So the printer is connected to the network, but after a bit the printer stops responding to ARP requests.....

WHY ?

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet Pro 8720 printer. I understand that your printer shows offline, and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

  • Check the connection between the printer and the Mac.
  • Reset the printer.
  • Delete the existing print queue and add the printer.
  • Reset the printing system.

Click here to refer the document and perform troubleshooting steps to fix this issue.

I have tried that already. As you can see form my original statement and about using arp caches etc, I have a detailed knowledge of IP networking.

So my original question stil stands, why does the HP printer after about 12 hours does not respond to a arp request to get the MAC address ?

Hey@srmiles,

Thanks for the response.

This appears to be a network issue between the printer and the Router.

I request you to perform the steps mentioned in the link below and check if that solves the issue.
