Every time I (very carefully) open the output tray extender, after the print job completes, I get the "Tray Open" error, and have to go through the process of opening and closing the tray to get the error to disappear.  How can I prevent this nuisance error from recurring?

For anyone else who may have this problem:

I called HP tech support and had the latest firmware loaded onto the printer which solved the problem.  I had installed the drivers from the CD provided with the printer and had gone to the HP site to download the latest drivers, but I did not download the lastest firmware.

Hey @Rick_Bradenton,

I understand that you're experiencing output 'tray open' error message issues with your HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to work with you today with regards to this issue.

On this printer you need to ensure that the bottom input tray is clicked all the way in. Next, remove the output tray assembly and flip it open to look in the bottom. Do you see a little gray button? There should be a lock and unlock symbol. Ensure your gray button is set to 'unlock'. With that being said, ideally when you print the output tray extender will automatically slide out for you and you simply push it back in once you're done your print job.

Should everything be set as it should be and yet you still get the 'tray open' message with the output tray extender I do believe you have a paper tray sensor failure on your printer.

To correct this ensure your printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet for power. Power strips and surge protectors can cause your product to lack power and not respond properly. Also, you could try a power reset. With your printer powered on disconnect your power cable. After 30 seconds plug the power cable back in and your printer should start up on it's own. Once the printer returns to a ready state try to print again to see if the error state reoccurs.

Please let me know if the steps I've provided resolve your issue. Should you still be experiencing issues there is an additional reset I can have you try. Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums. Good luck! 🙂

There is no grey button on the bottom of the output tray assembly.  Also, I find I receive the "tray open" message after each print job, regardless of whether I have opened the output tray extender.

I tried unplugging the printer while it was on and replugging it after 30 seconds.  The same error occurs after every print job, forcing me to open and close the tray to clear the error and press a button on the display to retain the existing paper settings.

This printer is brand new out of the box, so it must be under warranty.  How do I go about a warranty claim for this paper tray sensor failure?

Hi -

I'm having the same issue and installed the firmware dated 7-1-14, but am still having the problem.  That's the latest firmware for Windows 8.1.

Is there a newer firmware that HP gave you that solved the problem?

Thanks,

Neal

Hey @hpnb123,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you're also experiencing the 'tray open' error message on your HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer. Unfortunately, the 2014-07-01 Firmware Update version PNP1CN1419BR located here is the most current Firmware Update released for your model of printer.

Because you have already loaded the Firmware Update to no avail, I'm going to refer you to our Technical Support team by phone for additional support options.

HP Technical Support can be reached at:  800-474-6836.
