I cannot read the images on my printer’s display (Product HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-all-in-one printer - N911a). The images are there, but barely discernible. I can't put my finger on whether the screen is too bright or too faint, or the images are too light. The display is NOT blank or black (and the HP Troubleshooting solutions to correct those problems have not corrected my problem, ie Hard Power Reset, updated firmware, and adjusted brightness setting), just too bright or too faint. Even with the screen brightness on the darkest setting, I still cannot make out the images. Interestingly enough, at the end of the day yesterday, the screen self-corrected somehow, and was back to a readable display. However, it reverted back to the problem overnight.

Hi greenbeaner,

I understand that you are having an issue with your touch screen on your Officejet 8600 printer. Follow the steps in this document The Touchscreen Does Not Respond. You can also change the screen brightness by going into the *Setup* tab on the front panel of the printer and then into *Preferences* and choosing *Screen Brightness*.

Let me know if you need further assistance, I will be happy to help.

I am having the same problem. I would bet this is some kind of a hardware design flaw that causes a component controlling the display to fail. In my case it sometimes blinks on and off like a strobe before settling on the almost illegible white screen.

Same issue here!

Hi otcheryl,

I posted a reply to your Thread: HP Officejet Pro 8600 control panel is just a blank screen.

I tried all the troubleshooting that Advance 23 stated except this  - "You can also change the screen brightness by going into the *Setup* tab on the front panel of the printer and then into *Preferences* and choosing *Screen Brightness*." The problem with this is that I cannot access my front panel of the printer because my screen is blank!!

I attempted to access the firmware to which you referred - when the screen asked me to choose my printer, it stated under status "unavailable". My printer is on, and I can print to it, so the printer is not unavailable to my system. I presume that this means the firmware is not meant for my printer.

This is rather frustrating, and I appreciate your help. But it appears that this problem is prevalent and might need more than just a "reboot" of my printer.

Thanks for your reply - I hope that HP can resolve this issue. It looks like I am going to have to buy a new printer, but I don't want this same issue occurring.

I am having the same problem with my 8600.  Screen is so faint it is illegible.  As others have stated, it is NOT blank, just too light to read.  Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi busymom51 & otcheryl,

I understand that your issue is not the same as the title of the troubleshooting guide listed above: The Touchscreen Does Not Respond, however the troubleshooting steps are the recommended steps to attempt the resolution. If you followed the steps and the issue is not resolved, try again to update the firmware.

If your 8600 is the N911a, try this firmware update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a Firmware. The printer will need to be connected to a Windows computer via USB for the firmware update.

If the 8600 is the N911g or N911n, use this update: HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g_n Firmware. The printer will need to be connected to a Windows computer via USB for the firmware update.

If the firmware update does not help the dim display, contacting HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you would be the best option.

I also tried a number of things in an attempt to fix the same problem.  I eventually - and inadvertantly -  fixed the problem when I looked under the touchpad and fiddled with a small black plastic cover (presumably where the wiring from the main printer body enters the touchpad).  When I looked at the touchpad screen again, the display was as bright as it ever was.  I can only think that the wiring connections were not as good as they could be and that moving the connector cover had restored connection..
