I've had this printer for a while now and never had this problem, i opened the paper tray extender, (grey) which can be seen in the attached image, and now for some reason it does not want to close. If anyone could be of help i'd greatly appreciate it.

I have the exactly same problem!
In my case, I spray Wd-40 just a couple of drops
on the spot where in the above (stuck) image, "the open" area,
In other words, on looking down the (opened) stuck tray extender,
the right-most part, which contact the normal paper tray at 90 degree angle.
Withe some wiggling and pushing, the stuck parts will be loose.
Good Luck!!
