I followed the instructions the best I could.  That is, I did not have a manual and did not know what the references were.  BUt I did use a damp paper towel and cleaned the metal circles underneath the cartridges.  It still did not print in black, so I went to tools and clciked on cleaning.  Once that was done, the printer printed in black once again.

So thanks to the folks that figures this out and shared the information.

And I agree with one user who asked why HP itself doesn't provide such information.  Could it be to sell more printers? Aw no, it wouldn't do that.

I am having the same problem and have done all the same steps. Still no luck. I haven't replaced the printerhead so I suppose that could be the problem but I doubt it.

Thanks but this morning I am getting an error message for the first time that says "the printhead iinstalled is not intended for this printer or is damaged".

So I ordered a new printhead and am hoping it solves the problem. Hopefully it's not the internal printer circuitry and won't be out the money for a new printhead.

Well.... I 've tried everything you said (it didn't work!) ...  Desperate, I downloaded an update for my software...but this is not all!  I've tried HP Doctor (completely useless)...and finally with the HP software I cleaned the heads...result: white page!  but the software proposed "cleaning second level" ...Why not!  I've said...and BINGO!  you cannot make a second level cleaning with the printer itself, yes with the provided HP software!  I have saved my printer!  now it works like a charm!  cleaning it manually wasn't effective!

Can the second level cleaning process be explained - what is and how does one get to the second level cleaning?

Here's how I restored the black ink cartridge to print normally:

(1) I removed all ink cartridges and cleaned the copper connectors with a dampened Q-Tip.

(2) I got a damp paper towel and repeatedly pressed in on the silver circular vent that you will find under the black cartridge.  I did this many times until absolutely no black came up.  Let it dry.

(3) I replaced all cartridges and turned on the printer.

(4) I went to "tools/clean cartridge."  I ran this procedure a couple of times and my printer now printed black perfectly.

(5) I went one step further and aligned the cartridges.

I hope this works for you.  Have patience.

Thank you so much!!!

You should use the HP software you have installed for your printer. M1. Clean your printer, after dinished this cleaning the sofware asks if you want a second level cleaning. You say yes again. I hope this will help. My first level cleaning was not enough... Martin
