I think I have done what you have. The printer responds, fails, then starts to work again...

For whatever reason, the printer reads green in the HP printer Utility now. It could go red anytime. The airport Extreme and the printer are about a yard and a half apart. The reception shows excellent.

Do you think a newer Time Machine could help.I have read something about timing issues.  I have just been too lazy to replace my old airport.

By the way, the printer does a nice job when it prints, but even on the diagnostic it reads "no problems found" and won't print.

Try changing the driver and see if it makes a difference.

  1. Go to the Print and Fax applet under System Preferences
  2. Highlight your printer and select "Options and Supplies ..."
  3. Select "Driver"
  4. Under "Print Using:", choose HP Photosmart P1000 - Gutenprint V5.1.3

Well I switched drivers and the printer came to life.

I don't know for how long but I hope this is the fix. In a thousand years I would never have thought of this. It really is a nice printer, lets keep our fingers crossed.

What is the difference in the drivers by the way?

changed driver. no change in overall situation. wireless works for sometime - printer falls asleep and stays asleep. power light and blue wireless light stays on

To wll555,

I often use the Gutenprint drivers on early prototype printers.  I discovered accidentally that under some conditions I get a faster printer response using Gutenprint than with our standard product specific drivers.

Now I'm curious on what's going on.   I'll follow up with our Mac driver team to find out the differences between the C4580 driver Gutenprint.

BTW - here's a link to the Gutenprint site.

To seacardinal,

Have you applied the firmware upgrade to your C4580 yet?  Assuming you are a Mac user, here's the link.

To seacardinal:

You must be very frustrated...I know I was.

Which wireless are you using?

Is there a similar fix for the OfficeJet 6500?  Same problem as the C4580.  Any help would be appreciated.
