I recently inherited a Photosmart C4599 printer.  I set it up nicely with my windows-based laptop.  Worked beautifully.  Laptop died.  Internet provider changed.  Wireless printing no longer works.  Need to reconfigure the wireless on the printer using a MacBook Air running OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks).

Problem: Can't get access to change the IP address on the printer to use the new wireless router ... and the software on the mac only allows me to add the printer as a "USB multifunction" printer, not "Bonjour" or "Bonjour multifunction".

Question: Any idea how I can get access to the printer's wireless IP address ... or get the mac software to do the right thing?

Hello Amy_H,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I read your post and thought I could help manage the wireless settings on the C4599. With no HP full feature software available to install, the wireless setup will have to be a little me in depth.

In order to get the C4599 onto your network we first need to restore the network defaults on the C4599. (Steps for this found in the User Guide online. Any steps highlighted in bold are from User Guide)

To restore network defaults:
1. Press the Wireless button on the product.
2. Press the button next to the down arrow on the display until Restore Network
Defaults is highlighted, and then press OK.
3. Confirm that you want to restore the network defaults.

Now on the Mac, click the Wireless icon ( Wireless icon Mac.PNG ) and select hpsetup. It may take a minute, once connected the wireless icon should look like this: Ad-Hoc Mac.PNG

Now print an Network Configuration Page and gather the C4599's I.P address.

To print the network configuration page:
1. Press the Wireless button on the product.
2. Press the button next to the down arrow on the display until Print Network
Configuration Page is highlighted, and then press OK.

Open Safari on the Mac, type the I.P address into the address bar of Safari. A page about the c4599 should load, click Network, Wireless Setup Wizard (either located on the left or the main section of the page) and click Start. Following the sets will allow you to connect the C4599 to the network. Once connected join the Mac back to the correct network and try adding your Bonjour printer.

Let me know if this helped 🙂

Sneaky, sneaky that hpsetup hiding under the wireless icon!

I was able to reset the IP Address to a 169.x.x.x address and successfully connect to the printer via Safari.  Here's where things stopped going according to your script.

You say,

A page about the c4599 should load, click Network, Wireless Setup Wizard (either located on the left or the main section of the page) and click Start. Following the sets will allow you to connect the C4599 to the network. Once connected join the Mac back to the correct network and try adding your Bonjour printer.

Instead of Network, I have two tabs; Information and Networking.  There's no Wireless Setup Wizard under either tab.

Under Networking, I can choose "AutoIP"  OR I can enter the IP Submask and Gateway addresses manually.  I tried both (two successive attempts).  Both "successfully updated" to the printer.  I reconnected the Mac to the house network in order to add the Bonjour printer.  No Bonjour printer was available.  If I connect the printer via USB, I can add the USB multifunction without wireless access, which I was able to do previously.

Suggestions?

My apologizes, the information I used appears to have not applied to the C4599 like I thought.

Since you where able to successfully update the printer with the I.P info you manually entered for the network, print a configuration page if you have not already. Printing the page will verify that the information did save to the printer, now enter the I.P address you gave the printer into safari and see if the same page as before loads. If it does load, the network may be blocking the Bonjour printer.

A great way to test if the network is not cooperating is to restore the network defaults on the printer, join the hpsetup network on the Mac and try to add the printer Bonjour in Print and Scan. If you can add the printer this way, the network is blocking the Bonjour.

You mentioned that your Internet provider changed, did they setup a new router? If so, what brand?

Thanks,

Hi Jerends,

Your thread above looks to be about the problem I am encountering. In the last post you suggest that the network might be blocking the printer. I've just been provided with a new router by my ISP and this is when the problem arose. It's a Sagemcon F@st 3846 Optus (I suspect made in China specifically for Optus my ISP). Any hints as to how to solve this problem? I've been trying to get help from their Tech support but no joy so far.

Thanks!

Hi tandango,

You would want to learn if the router is able to broadcast the Bonjour protocol. If it can not, this router is not going to work for you.

Do you have a Smartphone, either Android or Apple? If so, with it connected to the router, run the app mentioned here: Help Determine if your router can support AirPrint with the Bonjour Discovery App and see if the printer is shown as Bonjour device.

Cheers!
