I've combed this forum and others and tried all the tricks.  I can print and copy, so there's no USB problem.  I've turned it all off and rebooted, downloaded an update, removed and re-added the printer, plugged, unplugged the USB and power cords.  I've tried using image capture but it says it is not connected to a scanning device.  I've reset the printer and uninstalled, per the directions in another thread.  Now when I add the printer back, the C4200 series is not an option for software, since I deleted it (and software updates on Mac of course detects no updates available)  so the default is "Generic PCL Printer" and of course, it still says the USB is not connected.   What now?  Thank you!

Hi @techtrampled,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand that you are getting a USB not connected error using your HP Photosmart c4280 on Mac 10.9.5. I am happy to help!

I would recommend to go through the steps in this printer is offline guide, 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Mac OS X.

Hope this guide helps, and have a wonderful day! Smiley Happy

Hi RNRMusicMan,

Thanks for replying.  Your solution did not work.  However, after following the steps, I tried deleting and adding the printer back again.  This time, Apple searched for the software for the HP 4200 series and reinstalled it, rather than defaulting to the "PCL printer," software as it did when I uninstalled the software and deleted and re-added the printer a few days ago, (despite several attempts at fetching the softwarre through Apple's software updates, it would not register when I tried a few days ago).  This new software download, after all the other add/delets, seems to have mostly solved the problem.  If I press scan on the printer, I still get the USB not connected message, but if I then go to the Apple menu, open System Preferences, open Printer & Scanner and click on the c4280 and then on the right, click on scanner or open scanner, then I get a message that the scanner is warming up, and I get a preview and I can actually scan!  Hurray!  so, I'd say the interface with OS10.9 may still be a bit glitchy, but at least there is a a way to make it work.

I have the same issue running 10.6.8   I have to go to the HP scan app and scan from there instead of using the scan button from the printer.  All the drivers, software is up to date
